Abstract

We propose an attractive realization of nonlinear coupling of superconducting charge qubit coupled to a transmission-line resonator. Our scheme provides a new approach to produce the strong squeezing effect via a flexible design of the superconducting qubit and mature experimental setup of circuit QED. By properly tuning the external magnetic flux, considerable squeezing can be generated. Strong coupling strength, immunity to noises and suppression of spontaneous emission make our scheme more robust and may be realized with conservative experimental parameters.

Nonlinear coupling between a nitrogen-vacancy-center ensemble and a superconducting qubit

Qiong Chen, Jun Wen, Wanli Yang +2 more

By exchange of virtual microwave photon induced by a transmission line resonator, the nonlinear interaction between a nitrogen-vacancy-center ensemble (NVE) and a superconducting charge qubit is achieved in circuit quantum electrodynamics, where the nonlinear coupling results from the second order of the coupling between the magnetic field of the transmission line resonator and the charge qubit. In our case, the nonlinear coupling can be much enhanced by a factor of the total spin number in the NVE. As an application, we present a potentially practical scheme to realize the squeezing of the NVE using the nonlinear coupling, which is within reach of the currently available technology.

Theory of Microwave Parametric Down-Conversion and Squeezing Using Circuit QED

Kyungsun Moon, S. M. Girvin

We study theoretically the parametric down-conversion and squeezing of microwaves using cavity quantum electrodynamics of a superconducting Cooper-pair box (CPB) qubit located inside a transmission line resonator. The nonlinear susceptibility chi2 describing three-wave mixing can be tuned by dc gate voltage applied to the CPB and vanishes by symmetry at the charge degeneracy point. We show that the coherent coupling of different cavity modes through the qubit can generate a squeezed state. Based on parameters realized in recent successful circuit QED experiments, squeezing of 95% approximately 13 dB below the vacuum noise level should be readily achievable.

Theory of degenerate three-wave mixing using circuit QED in solid-state circuits

Ye Cao, Wen Yi Huo, Qing Ai +1 more

We study the theory of degenerate three-wave mixing and the generation of squeezed microwaves using circuit quantum electrodynamics in solid state circuits. The Hamiltonian for degenerate three-wave mixing, which seemed to be given phenomenologically in quantum optics, is derived by quantum mechanical calculations. The nonlinear medium needed in three-wave mixing is composed of a series of superconducting charge qubits which are located inside two superconducting transmission-line resonators. Here, the multiqubit ensemble is present to enhance the effective coupling constant between the two modes in the transmission-line resonators. In the squeezing process, the qubits are kept in their ground states so that their decoherence does not corrupt the squeezing. The main obstacle preventing a large squeezing efficiency is the decay rate of the transmission-line resonator.

Generation of Schrödinger cat state in circuit QED

Gang Zhang, Ping Dong, Jian Zhou

An attractive scheme for generation the Schrödinger cat state is proposed in the circuit QED system with suitable driving field. By tuning the external magnetic flux properly, the qubit and cavity strong coupling can be realized insensitively to the thermal state of the cavity. Discussions show that our scheme is feasible within current experimental technology.

Strong squeezing and robust entanglement in cavity electromechanics

Eyob Alebachew Sete, Hichem Eleuch

We investigate nonlinear effects in an electromechanical system consisting of a superconducting charge qubit coupled to a transmission line resonator and a nanomechanical oscillator, which in turn is coupled to another transmission line resonator. The nonlinearities induced by the superconducting qubit and the optomechanical coupling play an important role in creating optomechanical entanglement as well as the squeezing of the transmitted microwave field. We show that strong squeezing of the microwave field and robust optomechanical entanglement can be achieved in the presence of moderate thermal decoherence of the mechanical mode. We also discuss the effect of the coupling of the superconducting qubit to the nanomechanical oscillator on the bistability behavior of the mean photon number.

Generating Squeezed States in Solid State Circuits

Wen Yi-Huo, Long Gui-Lu

We propose a scheme for generating squeezed states in solid state circuits which consist a superconducting transmission line resonator (STLR), a superconducting Cooper-pair box (CPB) and a nanoelectromechanical resonator (NMR). The nonlinear interaction between the STLR and the CPB can be implemented by setting the external biased flux of the CPB at some certain points. The interaction Hamiltonian between the STLR and the NMR is derived by performing Frohlich transformation on the total Hamiltonian of the combined system. Just by adiabatically keeping the CPB at the ground state, we get the standard parametric down-conversion Hamiltonian, and the squeezed states of the STLR can be easily generated, which is similar to the three-wave mixing in quantum optics.
