We investigate the dynamical properties of
S=21 two-leg spin-ladder systems. In a strong-coupling region, an isolated mode appears in the lowest excited states, while in a weak-coupling region, an isolated mode is reduced and the lowest excited states become a lower bound of the excitation continuum. We find in the system with equal intrachain and interchain couplings that due to a cyclic four-spin interaction, the distribution of the weights for the dynamical structure factor and characteristics of the lowest excited states are strongly influenced. The dynamical properties of the two systems proposed for
SrCu2O3 are also discussed.
The dynamical structure factor of the S=1/2 bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction in magnetic field is investigated using the continued fraction method based on the Lanczos algorithm. When the plateau exists on the magnetization curve, the longitudinal dynamical structure factor shows a large intensity with a periodic dispersion relation, while the transverse one shows a large intensity with an almost dispersionless mode. The periodicity and the amplitude of the dispersion relation in the longitudinal dynamical structure factor are sensitive to the coupling constants. The dynamical structure factor of the S=1/2 two-leg ladder in magnetic field is also calculated in the strong interchain-coupling regime. The dynamical structure factor shows gapless or gapful behavior depending on the wave vector along the rung.
Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin ``ladders'' (two coupled spin chains) are low-dimensional magnetic systems which for S=1/2 interpolate between half-integer-spin chains, when the chains are decoupled, and effective integer-spin one-dimensional chains in the strong-coupling limit. The spin-1/2 ladder may be realized in nature by vanadyl pyrophosphate, (VO
)2P2O7. In this paper we apply strong-coupling perturbation theory, spin-wave theory, Lanczos techniques, and a Monte Carlo method to determine the ground-state energy and the low-lying excitation spectrum of the ladder. We find evidence of a nonzero spin gap for all interchain couplings ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$>0. A band of spin-triplet excitations above the gap is also analyzed. These excitations are unusual for an antiferromagnet, since their long-wavelength dispersion relation behaves as (k-
k0)2 (in the strong-coupling limit ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$\ensuremath{\gg}J, where J is the in-chain antiferromagnetic coupling). Their band is folded, with a minimum energy at
k0=\ensuremath{\pi}, and a maximum between
k1=\ensuremath{\pi}/2 (for ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$=0) and 0 (for ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$=\ensuremath{\infty}). We also give numerical results for the dynamical structure factor S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}), which can be determined in neutron scattering experiments. Finally, possible experimental techniques for studying the excitation spectrum are discussed.
The zero-field excitation spectrum of the strong-leg spin ladder (C

2CuBr
4 is studied with a neutron time-of-flight technique. The spectrum is decomposed into its symmetric and asymmetric parts with respect to the rung momentum and compared with theoretical results obtained by the density matrix renormalization group method. Additionally, the calculated dynamical correlations are shown for a wide range of rung and leg coupling ratios in order to point out the evolution of arising excitations, as, e.g., of the two-magnon bound state from the strong to the weak coupling limit.
We determine the dynamical structure factor of the two-leg spin-
21 Heisenberg ladder at low temperatures in the regime of strong rung coupling. The dominant feature at zero temperature is the coherent triplon mode. We show that the line shape of this mode broadens in a nonsymmetric way at finite temperatures and that the degree of asymmetry increases with temperature. We also show that at low frequencies, a temperature-induced resonance akin to the Villain mode in the spin-
21 Heisenberg Ising chain emerges.
We derive an approximate theory for Heisenberg spin ladders with two legs by mapping the spin dynamics onto the problem of hard-core ``bond bosons.'' The parameters of the bosonic Hamiltonian are obtained by matching anomalous Green's functions to Lanczos results and we find evidence for a strong renormalization due to quantum fluctuations. Various dynamical spin correlation functions are calculated and found to be in good agreement with Lanczos results. We then enlarge the effective Hamiltonian to describe the coupling of the bosonic spin fluctuations to a single hole injected into the system and treat the hole dynamics within the rainbow-diagram approximation of Schmitt-Rink et al. Theoretical predictions for the single-hole spectral function are obtained and found to be in good agreement with Lanczos results.
