Frequency Modulation in the Spectroscopy of an Inhomogeneously Broadened Line

Abstract

The effect of frequency modulation on an inhomogeneously broadened line is studied when the modulation frequency or amplitude is larger than the homogeneous width but less than the inhomogeneous width. It is shown that the deviation from the instantaneous response for the polarization disappears as a result of the averaging effect when the field intensity is weak.

Frequency-modulated normal modes of electromagnetically induced transparency

Oleg M. Parshkov, Alexander A. Makoveichuk

The theoretical results on the study of the evolution of electromagnetically induced transparency probe pulses with frequency modulation on the input surface of the active medium and possible frequency modulation of the control field are presented. It was shown that the presence of a sufficiently large frequency modulation of the input probe pulse (an instantaneous frequency offset of the order of an inhomogeneous line width resonant with the probe field) does not lead to the mode structure destruction of this field inside the active medium. At the same time, the transparency of the medium for the probe field is noticeably reduced, but it remains quite large. With frequency modulation of the control radiation, the mode regime of the probe field propagation is realized at least as long as the deviation of the frequency of the control field is less than half the width of the line of the probe quantum transition. However, the transparency of the medium for the probe field decreases in comparison with the case of the absence of frequency modulation. The analysis is carried out for the Ʌ-scheme of inhomogeneously broadened quantum transitions between the 3P0, 3P01 and 3P2 levels of the 208Pb isotope.

Nonlinear spectra of a homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened two-level system

Amenaida Ferrer Marcano, O. M. C. Salazar, J. L. Paz +2 more

Polarization and Rayleigh type optical mixing spectra of a homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened two-level system are calculated. We show that the nonlinear signal has contributions from the population pulsation and saturation effect. In the homogeneous system these effects can induce an asymmetric spectrum when the probe frequency is different from the resonant value. In the inhomogeneous system the spectral response is always symmetric independent of the probe frequency value. Line saturation and dynamic stark splitting are substantially reduced in the inhomogeneous case. The mentioned differences can be used to identify the type of broadening of a given spectral line.

Large optical depth frequency modulation spectroscopy

Chang Chi Kwong, E. A. Chan, S. A. Aljunid +2 more

Band-resolved frequency modulation spectroscopy is a common method to measure weak signals of radiative ensembles. When the optical depth of the medium is large, the signal drops exponentially and the technique becomes ineffective. In this situation, we show that a signal can be recovered when a larger modulation index is applied. Noticeably, this signal can be dominated by the natural linewidth of the resonance, regardless of the presence of inhomogeneous line broadening. We implement this technique on a cesium vapor, and then explore its main spectroscopic features. This work opens the road towards measurement of cooperative emission effects in bulk atomic ensemble.

Multiphoton resonances in the modulated fluorescence from an inhomogeneously broadened medium

Wilhelmus M. Ruyten

We consider the interaction of a fully amplitude-modulated, narrow-band laser with a strongly inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium and show that harmonics of the fluorescence of susceptibility, unlike the time-averaged fluorescence, retain the characteristic multiphoton resonance structure that is found in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening. This behavior correlates with the existence of double branches of the corresponding Bloch-Siegert resonance curves. For strong fields, the depth of modulation and the phase shift of the lowest fluorescence harmonic may deviate significantly from the results for weak, broadband excitation.

Effect of detuning on a single-mode modulated laser

Binoy Krishna Goswami, Dhruba J. Biswas

We have compared the impact of loss, pump, and frequency modulations on a single-mode homogeneously broadened laser under varying detunings and modulation frequencies. In the case of loss and gain modulations the impact on intensity shows a minimal behavior at the line center for gain values more than twice the lasing threshold. The system relaxation time with respect to any transient perturbation depends on the magnitude of detuning and is minimal at the line center. In the case of frequency modulation, the impact on intensity vanishes at the line center irrespective of the gain values. These results are based on linear analysis.

Resonance ionization of atoms in a strong spatially inhomogeneous electromagnetic field

A. I. Andryushin, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

An investigation is made of the influence of spatial inhomogeneity of the electromagnetic field on the process of resonance ionization of atoms. It is shown that the result of averaging over the spatial distribution of the field depends on the mechanism for formation of a dispersion dependence of the ionization probability on the radiation frequency. For all known initiating mechanisms, analytic expressions are derived to determine the line profile of the dispersion curve in a spatially inhomogeneous field having a Gaussian distribution over the transverse coordinate. It is found that if the extreme value of the energy shift of the transition due to the dynamic Stark effect αF02 is greater than the width of the dispersion curve in a homogeneous field, allowance for spatial inhomogeneity results in additional broadening of the dispersion curve, its actual order-of-magnitude width being αF02.
