Resonance ionization of atoms in a strong spatially inhomogeneous electromagnetic field

Abstract

An investigation is made of the influence of spatial inhomogeneity of the electromagnetic field on the process of resonance ionization of atoms. It is shown that the result of averaging over the spatial distribution of the field depends on the mechanism for formation of a dispersion dependence of the ionization probability on the radiation frequency. For all known initiating mechanisms, analytic expressions are derived to determine the line profile of the dispersion curve in a spatially inhomogeneous field having a Gaussian distribution over the transverse coordinate. It is found that if the extreme value of the energy shift of the transition due to the dynamic Stark effect αF02 is greater than the width of the dispersion curve in a homogeneous field, allowance for spatial inhomogeneity results in additional broadening of the dispersion curve, its actual order-of-magnitude width being αF02.

Influence of the Stark effect on multiphoton ionization of atoms when the dynamic polarizability depends strongly on the laser frequency

І. І. Бондар, В. В. Суран

The influence of the Stark effect on multiphoton ionization of Ba atoms under conditions when the dynamic polarizability depends strongly on the frequency of the laser radiation is investigated. It is found that for some electric field strengths ε of the laser radiation this effect gives rise to resonance peaks in the Ba + ion yield as a function of the laser radiation frequency at frequencies corresponding to single-photon transitions between the excited states. These frequencies can differ substantially from the frequencies corresponding to the conventional multiphoton excitation of these states from the ground states of the atoms. Peaks in the ion yield as a function of ε behave differently from the conventional Stark effect—their position on the frequency scale does not depend strongly on ε . The conditions under which such an induced resonance structure appears are determined.

Spatial inhomogeneity of the absorption and re-emission properties of an optically active medium in a resonator

Андрій Сіжук, Konstantin E. Dorfman, C. H. Raymond Ooi

The spatial inhomogeneity of absorption coefficient of the space between mirrors, filled by an optically active gas, is analyzed in quantum optical terms. It was theoretically shown, that the quantization of electromagnetic field in a cavity (optical resonator) can reveal the spatial inhomogeneity of absorption or re-emission ability of the optically active medium. It appears from the analytical calculations, the inhomogeneity is caused by the Doppler frequency shifts (including recoil effects) during the atom-photon collisions and the non-zero initial frequency width of the scanning signal. The proposed analytical representation of the absorption coefficient through the additive quantum optical terms gives deeper insight into intrinsic processes in the interacting with light matter.

Inhomogeneity effects in a gas laser

Guy Michel Stéphan, Manfred Trümper

We show that in a gas laser the inhomogeneity in the distribution of amplifying atoms and the transverse Gaussian distribution of the saturating electromagnetic field give rise to different lens effects which are generally opposite to each other and influence the line shapes in different ways, shifting the Lamb dip either to the blue or to the red. For those laser phenomena which increase one or the other of the lens effects, the role of a diaphragm is of particular importance, since it determines the spatial distribution of the resonant field. We present here a new method for studying the resonant diffracted field in a laser. Also, we give a unified description of the various inhomogeneities. Doing away with the usual method of mean-field approximation, we numerically calculate, for a diaphragmed, monomode weak-gain gas laser, the intensity, variation of the beam diameter, and the radius of curvature as functions of the frequency.

Coherence of the electromagnetic field in dielectric waveguides

I. A. Deryugin, Sherzod Shukhratovich Abdullaev, Ag T Mirzaev

An investigation is made of the coherence of the electromagnetic field in a plane dielectric waveguide excited by an external field with specific coherence properties. The quantum theory of an electromagnetic field in one-dimensionally inhomogeneous media is employed to derive an expression which relates the correlation functions of the field inside the waveguide to the external field. This expression is used to study the variation of the coherence of the radiation at various distances z from the area where the radiation is coupled into the waveguide. If the external field has a finite line width, the spatial coherence is a periodic function of z when z ≪ z cr and tends to a constant value when z ≫ z cr . When z ≪ z cr , the temporal coherence is the same as for the external source, whilst when z ≫ z cr , the temporal coherence as a function of τ has maxima which move away from the point τ = 0 with increasing z . It is found that the coherence tunes τ 1 and τ 2 determined following Wolf and Mandel behave differently when z ≫ z cr : τ 1 2 increases quadratically with increasing z , whereas τ 2 tends to a constant value. The form of the radiation modulation spectrum is deduced. Curves are plotted for the spatial and temporal coherence by way of a specific example.

Excitation of transitions between atomic or molecular energy levels by monochromatic laser radiation - II. Excitation under conditions of strictly inhomogeneous line broadening and mixed homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening

Robert A. L. Smith

Abstract The development with time of the excitation of a transition between two atomic or molecular energy levels under the influence of monochromatic laser radiation is examined under conditions of strictly inhomogeneous line broadening due to such causes as doppler shift arising from translational velocity. The ratio of the number of molecules, N2, in an excited state to the total number, N, is calculated for various ratios of the intensity parameter β ═ E0μ/ħ to the half line-width ∆, where E0 is the amplitude of the electric field in the incident radiation and is the dipole moment matrix element for the transition. Excitation functions obtained in a previous paper (I) for various values of the ratio γ/β, where γ is the half line-width in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening, are used to obtain the variation of N2/N with time under conditions of mixed broadening for various values of the ratio γ/∆ and γ/β, when the exciting radiation is in exact resonance with the central frequency of the transition.

The effect of uncorrelatedness of inhomogeneous broadening on the formation of transient optical processes in multilevel systems

L. A. Nefedev, Э. И. Низамова, S. V. Taktaeva

The correlation of inhomogeneous broadening at various frequency transitions in three-level systems is investigated, as is its effect on the intensity of a stimulated photon echo. It is shown that the correlation coefficient of inhomogeneous broadening at two different transitions and the response intensity of the stimulated photon echo depend on the parameter of the random interaction of an optical electron with a local field, as well as on the distribution width of additional frequency shifts owing to a partial fixation of transition energies. In this case, an insignificant variation of the correlation coefficient results in a considerable decrease in the response intensity.
