Relaxation and Optical Processes in Impurity Centres with Two‐Well Adiabatic Potential

S. Kulagin, Игорь Сергеевич Осадько

Abstract

Abstract The theory of interwell and intrawell relaxation is developed. Numerical calculation of appropriate transition propabilities is realized. It shows relaxation dependence on temperature and two‐well system parameters. On the basis of the same theory two specific experimental effects (the appearance of “multiplets” in quasi‐line spectra and “hole‐burning”) are analyzed.

The Shape of a Spectral Hole and Its Temporal Response at Short Burning Times in Two‐, Three,‐ and Four‐Level Systems

Inna Rebane

Abstract The shape of the spectral hole in an inhomogeneous distribution function of centres over the transition frequency is calculated for the case of a quasimonochromatic burning light pulse which characteristic duration time is comparable to the relaxation times of the excited electronic level. Two‐step spectral hole‐burning in the cases of three‐ and four‐level systems as well as one‐step processes are considered. The temporal responses of the spectral holes as spectral filters on δ‐pulse of light are found.

Theory of Two‐Step Spectral Hole Burning by Pulses

Inna Rebane

Abstract A two‐step spectral hole burning (SHB) is considered, where the selective excitation of the first step is fixed by a photochemical transformation through the second excitation step. It is shown that in a three‐level system excited by two consecutive pulses, the kinetics of the forming spectral hole differs essentially from the one on stationary irradiation. In the case of a short second pulse the shape of the hole in the inhomogeneous distribution function (IDF) of the purely electronic line frequency Ω01 is dependent on the time interval T between the first and second excitation steps and under certain conditions a hole can be obtained which is narrower than in the one‐step SHB with monochromatic light. It is considered how the hole in IDF is manifested in the absorption and two‐step pulse excitation spectra. It is shown that the hole in the absorption spectrum may be narrower than 2γ1 and in the two‐step pulse excitation, −γ1 (γ1 is the energy relaxation constant of the first excited level).

Theory of impurity excitation transfer via a phonon field

L. P. Godenko, Vladimir S. Mashkevich, E. A. Shadchin

Abstract Processes of impurity excitation energy transfer are studied by the method of quantum correlation functions. The probabilities of the process are calculated. The probability dependence on the spacing of the interacting centres is determined. The contribution of the process to the guest centre spectral line width is investigated.

Collective state of interwell excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum wells under pulse resonance excitation

A. V. Larionov, Vladislav B. Timofeev, J. M. Hvam +1 more

The time evolution and kinetics of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of interwell excitons in double GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells ( n-i-n structures) have been investigated under the pulse resonance excitation of intrawell 1sHH excitons using a pulsed tunable laser. It is found that the collective exciton phase arises with a time delay relative to the exciting pulse (several nanoseconds), which is due to density and temperature relaxation to the equilibrium values. The origination of the collective phase of interwell excitons is accompanied by a strong narrowing of the corresponding photoluminescence line (the line width is about 1.1 meV), a superlinear rise in its intensity, a long time in the change of the degree of circular polarization, a displacement of the PL spectrum toward lower energies (about 1.5 meV) in accordance with the filling of the lowest state with the exciton Bose condensate, and a significant increase in the radiative decay rate of the condensed phase. The collective exciton phase arises at temperatures T <6 K and interwell exciton densities n =3×10 10 cm −2 . Coherent properties of the collective phase of interwell excitons and experimental manifestations of this coherence are discussed.

Theory of photon echoes and hole burning in low temperature glasses: How good are the standard approximations?

Eitan Geva, James L. Skinner

The theory of optical photon echo and hole burning spectroscopies in low temperature glasses is discussed within the framework of the tunneling two-level system and stochastic sudden jump models. Exact results for the relevant theoretical quantities involve certain averages over the distributions of the two-level system energies and relaxation rates. The standard approximations for these averages are critically examined, for experimentally realistic parameters, via comparison to numerically exact calculations. The general conclusion is that the standard approximations are often used under conditions where they are not expected to be quantitatively accurate.
