The phase properties of the squeezed thermal states have been studied by evaluating the expression for the phase probability distribution and the phase variance in the weak squeezing limit.
Phase properties of squeezed number states and squeezed thermal states are studied. Exact analytical formulae for phase distributions based on different phase approaches are derived and illustrated graphically. It is shown that the phase quasiprobability distribution P (W) ( theta ) associated with the Wigner function does not depend on the photon number of the initial number state and has the same form for both kinds of squeezed states under consideration while the Pegg-Barnett phase distribution and the phase quasiprobability distributions associated with the Q function and the Glauber-Sudarshan P function, approach P (W) ( theta ) in the limit of highly excited states.
The quantum phase distributions and variances of strong coherent and phase-squeezed states mixed with thermal light are calculated. We find that the effect of thermal light on the coherent phase distribution becomes important only when the number of thermal photons is of order one-half. Its effect on the phase distribution of phase-squeezed states (for the case where the number of photons is very large compared to e2r) becomes important when the number of thermal photons is of order $\frac{1}{2}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}2r}$, where r is the squeezing parameter.
Much attention has been given in the past to two classes of squeezed states: the squeezed vacuum and coherent states. Here we study the effects of squeezing on number states and on thermal field states. The statistical properties of these various squeezed states are discussed using the second-order correlation functions. The quasiprobabilities of the Wigner, Q, and positive P representations are calculated and compared for the squeezed states. The Glauber P representation for the squeezed thermal state explicitly shows the limit of its applicability. The photon number distributions of the squeezed number and squeezed thermal states are extensively discussed and new interference effects in phase space are shown to lead to highly structured number distributions.
By use of the squeezed-number-state basis, we study several features of the squeezed thermal states. Higher-order squeezing properties are found to be entirely determined by the second-order ones. The photon-number distribution is expressed in closed form in terms of a Legendre polynomial. We point out that at a critical value of the squeeze parameter, pairwise oscillations of the photon-number distribution set in. Finally, a compact analytical expression of the exact lth-order correlation function is derived and examined.
