Influence of spontaneous emission on trapping states and start-up times of degenerate two-photon micromasers

E. S. Guerra, S. M. Dutra, P. L. Knight +1 more

We study degenerate two-photon micromasers pumped by cascade three-level atoms, where each atomic energy level has a different linewidth. Our model allows us to recover the ordinary two-photon micromaser situation when these widths vanish. In the limit of large linewidths we obtain a two-photon laser model. We show that trapping states are extremely sensitive to atomic decay, even when the decay time is small in comparison to the transit time through the cavity. Unlike the one-photon micromaser, they are sensitive to the linewidth of the upper, as well as the lower energy level. We have also studied the effects of atomic decay on the starting time of micromasers and on the noise. We found that there is a significant difference between the behavior of two-photon micromasers and lasers as we change the ratio of the widths of the upper and lower levels.

Laser control of decay rates in three-level atoms

Yevgeny V. Radeonychev, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

Summary form only given. In three-level atoms the drastic modification of the decay rates by the driving field may occur in the free space as soon as one dynamic Stark level crosses a neighboring unperturbed atomic energy state. This leads to appearance of spontaneous emission from the former ground state to the lower dynamic Stark level or spontaneous decay from the upper dynamic Stark level to the excited atomic state. For an experimental realization we propose to use a cell with potassium (/sup 39/K) vapor in magnetic field driven on D1-transition by circular polarized radiation of Ti:sapphire or dye laser.

Correlated-emission laser: Theory of the quantum-beat micromaser

János A. Bergou, Miguel Orszag

We show that if we inject three-level atoms, at a low rate, through a double cavity, with the two upper levels strongly coupled, and if, in the theoretical analysis, one makes the rotating-wave approximation, this problem is formally equivalent to the ordinary two-level micromaser. We also obtain the relevant master equation and the photon statistics.
