Overdamped Josephson junctions for applications to precision measurement

V. Lacquaniti, Domenico Andreone, Matteo Fretto +6 more

Overdamped Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions are an intermediate state between the SIS and SNS Josephson junctions. With a proper choice of fabrication parameters, stable and reproducible nonhysteretic curent-voltage characteristics have been obtained Featuring critical current densities up to 70 kA/cm2and characteristic voltages up to 450 μV at 4.2 K, overdamped junctions are suitable for many aplications ranging from RSFQ electronic circuits to programmable and ac voltage standards. Tests on single junctions arrays of series-connected junctions have shown a suitable behaviour when driven by a microwave with frequencies around 75 GHz. The quantized steps have proven to be stable and flat at nV level. These junctions also shown an improved temperature dependence, which can be interesting in view of the development instrumentation with an integrated quantum voltage reference operated in a closed cycle refrigerator.

Josephson Series Arrays for Programmable 10-V SINIS Josephson Voltage Standards and for Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizers Based on SNS Junctions

J. Kohlmann, F. Muller, Oliver Kieler +4 more

Programmable Josephson voltage standards for output voltages up to 10 V have been realized. Binary-divided series arrays consisting of 69 632 overdamped SINIS Josephson junctions have been fabricated using reliable Nb-Al/Al2O3technology (S: superconductor, I: insulator, N: normal metal). Series arrays of about 1000 SNS Josephson junctions were realized as lumped arrays for applications in the Josephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer (JAWS). We suggest a novel scheme for combining the higher voltages generated by the binary-divided arrays with the frequency spectral characteristics of the JAWS, in order to optimize the frequency spectrum of the generated ac voltages

NbN-Based Overdamped Josephson Junctions for Quantum Voltage Standards

Hirotake Yamamori, Takahiro Yamada, Hitoshi SASAKI +1 more

524,288 NbN-based Josephson junctions were integrated to produce a programmable Josephson voltage standard (PJVS) on a die of 15mm × 15mm, and the PJVS circuit was cooled to 10K using a cryocooler and operated with a current margin of about 1.0mA. Although an output voltage of 10V was required for a voltage standard, the circuit was designed to generate the maximum output voltage of 17V because it was difficult to avoid a reduction of the output voltage due to defects. Although a perfect chip without any defect was rarely fabricated, the high voltage chip that generated at least 10V was fabricated with the fabrication yield of larger than 30%. The fabrication yield was also improved by optimizing the film growth conditions to reduce the film stress and the number of particles. Applications for a secondary voltage standard and an ac Josephson voltage standard are also described.
