Coherence and optical Kerr nonlinearity

Abstract

A simple theory was developed to study the effects of Kerr nonlinearity on the electromagnetic-field coherence. A symmetric nonlinear Mach-Zehnder optical fiber interferometer is analyzed. The field is perturbed in phase and amplitude. The statistical properties of the output intensity are calculated. The effects of nonlinearity are shown as positive or negative depending on the phase difference between the interferometer arms.

Quantum theory of the nonlinear interferometer

Masataka Shirasaki, H. A. Haus, D. Liu Wong

A full quantum theory of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer with nonlinear Kerr media in both arms is presented. The nonlinear operator equations can be integrated, and the result can be normal-ordered. This permits evaluation of the factorial moments of the photon number to all orders of the nonlinearity. Various excitations and phase biases are studied. The degree of squeezing by the interferometer is determined.

Classical theory of optical squeezing in a nonlinear fiber interferometer

M.E. Marhic

A nonlinear Mach-Zehnder fiber-optic interferometer as shown in Fig. 1 can be used for light squeezing1 and amplification.2 The mechanism can be viewed either as the Kerr effect,1 or degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM).2 Using the classical DFWM approach, one finds that if fields of the same frequency with phasors E s and E p (′signal′ and ′pump′) are fed into the inputs, then one output phasor is given by where the nonlinear phase shift is given by δφnl= QL |E S E p | cosδ, Q is the fiber nonlinear coefficient, L is the fiber length, and δ is the phase difference between the inputs.

In this article, the dependence of bistability characteristic of the two-port nonlinear fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (TPNFMZI) on initial phase shift, wavelength of input signal, nonlinear coefficient of refractive index and length of nonlinear fiber is investigated and discussed. The results of this work play an important role in designing the TPNFMZI and its application in the future.

Quantum limits to all-optical switching in the nonlinear Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Barry C. Sanders, Gerard J Milburn

A Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a nonlinear medium in each arm is treated as an all-optical switching device. In a classical treatment, the interferometer can, in principle, operate as an ideal switch, but quantization of the electromagnetic fields limits the switching capability. In this treatment we illustrate the fundamental quantum limits that apply to switching in all-optical devices by studying the nonlinear Mach–Zehnder interferometer. In particular the input states are assumed to be coherent states and the reduction in the quality of the switching device is discussed.

Decoherence of the field in quantum nondemolition photon number measurement using the Kerr nonlinearity

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ

The role of decoherence of an electromagnetic field in the process of quantum nondemolition measurement of the number of photons using a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer is investigated. This decoherence is caused by distributed losses in a Kerr medium. A long interaction time between the field and the medium is required to achieve a high accuracy in the photon number measurement. The losses in the Kerr medium accompanying the resonance four-wave interaction between the measured and the probe fields lead to a measurement error close to unity at γτ ≫1 (γ is the rate of losses in the medium, and τ is the time of interaction between the field and the medium); consequently, nondemolition quantum measurement turns out to be impossible in the scheme considered. Under these conditions, an increase in the intensity of the probe field does not result in achievement of the required measurement accuracy.
