Quantum dynamics of a dissipative Kerr medium with time-dependent parameters

Abstract

We present the effects of time-dependent parameters, such as frequency and nonlinearity, on the dynamics of a mode propagating throughout a Kerr medium described as an anharmonic oscillator. The time-dependent frequency only gives a rotation of physical observables in the phase space, while the time modulation of the nonlinearity allows one to obtain the macroscopic superposition of quantum states at every crystal length larger than the canonical ones.

Quantum dynamics of a driven parametric oscillator in a Kerr medium

Elmira Bolandhemmat, Fardin Kheirandish

In this paper, we first analyze a parametric oscillator with both mass and frequency time-dependent. We show that the evolution operator can be obtained from the evolution operator of another parametric oscillator with a constant mass and time-dependent frequency followed by a time transformation [Formula: see text]. Then we proceed by investigating the quantum dynamics of a parametric oscillator with unit mass and time-dependent frequency in a Kerr medium under the influence of a time-dependent force along the motion of the oscillator. The quantum dynamics of the time-dependent oscillator is analyzed from both analytical and numerical points of view in two main regimes: (i) small Kerr parameter [Formula: see text], and (ii) small confinement parameter k. In the following, to investigate the characteristics and statistical properties of the generated states, we calculate the autocorrelation function, the Mandel Q parameter, and the Husimi Q-function.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cats in a tunable cavity filled with a Kerr medium

Roberto de J. León‐Montiel, H. M. Moya-Cessa

In this work we analyze the temporal dynamics of a system comprising an optical cavity filled with a nonlinear Kerr medium, whose frequency is allowed to change during time evolution. By exactly solving the corresponding time-dependent anharmonic-oscillator Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that squeezed coherent-state superpositions can be generated within the optical cavity. Moreover, we show that the squeezing degree of the produced states may be tuned by properly controlling the frequency shift of the cavity, a feature that might lead to interesting studies in the field of quantum state engineering.

Quantum theory of propagation of elliptically polarized light through a Kerr medium

G. S. Agarwal, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

We consider quantum-mechanically partially polarized light propagating through a Kerr-like medium. Using the usual form of the induced polarization P=A(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$)E+B(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E})\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$, the theory is formulated in terms of an effective Hamiltonian which is quartic in terms of the operators for two orthogonally polarized modes. Exact solutions in closed form for the Heisenberg equations of motion are obtained. These solutions are used to evaluate the physical behavior of various observables as the field propagates through a nonlinear medium. We also present explicit results for the time evolution of the input coherent and Fock states of the field. We show the generation of states that are macroscopic superposition of coherent states. We also find that if the input field is completely polarized, then due to quantum effects the output field becomes partially polarized. This is in contrast to the classical prediction and can have an important bearing on questions like topological phases of light propagating through a nonlinear medium. Numerical results for the energy in each mode, the correlation between two modes, and the higher-order correlations are presented. The input photon statistics is found to make a considerable difference in the dynamics.

Quantum interference and sub-Poissonian statistics for time-modulated driven dissipative nonlinear oscillators

T. V. Gevorgyan, A. R. Shahinyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We show that quantum-interference phenomena can be realized for the dissipative nonlinear systems exhibiting hysteresis-cycle behavior and quantum chaos. Such results are obtained for a driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator with time-dependent parameters and take place for the regimes of long time intervals exceeding dissipation time and for macroscopic levels of oscillatory excitation numbers. Two schemas of time modulation, (i) periodic variation in the strength of the $\ensuremath{\chi}(3)$ nonlinearity; (ii) periodic modulation of the amplitude of the driving force, are considered. These effects are obtained within the framework of phase-space quantum distributions. It is demonstrated that the Wigner functions of oscillatory mode in both bistable and chaotic regimes acquire negative values and interference patterns in parts of phase-space due to appropriately time modulation of the oscillatory nonlinear dynamics. It is also shown that the time modulation of the oscillatory parameters essentially improves the degree of sub-Poissonian statistics of excitation numbers.

Moyal phase-space analysis of nonlinear optical Kerr media

T. A. Osborn, Karl-Peter Marzlin

Nonlinear optical media of Kerr type are described by a particular version of an anharmonic quantum harmonic oscillator. The dynamics of this system can be described using the Moyal equations of motion, which correspond to a quantum phase-space representation of the Heisenberg equations of motion. For the Kerr system we derive exact solutions of the Moyal equations for an irreducible set of observables. These Moyal solutions incorporate the asymptotics of the classical limit in a simple, explicit form. An unusual feature of these solutions is that they exhibit periodic singularities in the time variable. These singularities are removed by the phase-space averaging required to construct the expectation value for an arbitrary initial state. Nevertheless, for strongly number-squeezed initial states the effects of the singularity remain observable.

Time evolution of an anharmonic oscillator interacting with a squeezed bath

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Mauro Fortunato, P. Tombesi

The evolution of a single mode of the electromagnetic field interacting with a squeezed bath in a Kerr medium is considered. The solution of the corresponding master equation is given numerically. It is argued that the creation of a superposition state (Schrodinger`s cat) is better achieved in the presence of a squeezed reservoir than of a thermal one.
