Abstract

The method of registration of weak light pulses in a mode of the photon counting is discussed. The principle of photon counting, its key points and operating circuit configuration, as well as characteristics of photomultiplier tubes and basic characteristics of the photon counting is explained. The appendix of techniques of the photon counting for experiments in the field of a photon echo is considered.

Continuous measurement of photon number with double registration of counts

A. Lukš, Vlasta Peřinová, J. Křepelka

The theory of continuous measurement has been applied to photon counting by means of an atomic beam crossing a cavity and impinging on a field-ionization detector behind. An interesting feature of the proposed measurement consists in an incoherent frequency down-conversion coupling of the measured mode to another mode, which, on the assumption that the latter is initially in the vacuum state, results in a second registration of the counts.

SUPERCONDUCTING SINGLE-PHOTON DETECTION

Guo Guang-Can

Single-photon detection, which is the core of weak light detection, plays key role in the fields of quantum information, physics, biology, chemistry and astronomy. The low sensibility and the high dark count rate of traditional single-photon detectors which base on photomultiplier tube or avalanche photodiode limit the improvement of the signal noise ratio and the low counting rate limits the detecting speed and the dynamic range. Here we review the single-photon detecting technology using superconducting materials as light sensitive apparatus.Their quantum efficiency, dark count rate and counting rate outclass the traditional single-photon detector.Their appearances certainly will bring a great influence to the subjects relating to the single-photon detection.

Comments on the Photon Echoes

А. В. Алексеев, U. Kh. Kopvillem

The coherent light pulses obtained in the experiments of light echoes type [1] (as induction and echoes signals) and generated by the electric dipole system bring the information about the dynamical properties of the dipole system and are used for the registration of that information. As to the dynamics of the emitted photons them-selves at the present time the effects of pulse form changing [2] and self-induced transperancy [3] caused by the photon system interaction with the matter were taken into consideration only. In this work we discuss the memory effects of the system of photons itself spreading into the vacuum. The discussed effect is the method of the space-time coherence re-establishment of the laser radiation on the basis of application the effect which we called the photon echoes. The point of the method is in the plural reflection of electromagnetic radiation from the mirrors which gives the steady-state conditions of the electromagnetic wave spreading and is caused by diffraction. In itself the steady-state conditions of the electromagnetic wave spreading denote that the mutual intensity function J(n)(x1, x2) is not dependent of the X1 and x2 coordinates if the n is sufficiently large (it is the factorisation condition of the mutual intensity function), and as it was shown in the work [4] the
