Cumulant‐based approximations to reduced density matrices Frank E. Harris
Published Jan 1, 2002 • 39 citations
Abstract Abstract The use of cumulant expansions for the approximation of reduced density matrices (RDMs) is reviewed. It is pointed out that the oft‐cited theorems of Nakatsuji and Rosina are insufficient to guarantee either N‐representability or that an N‐representable RDM has a unique antecedent wave function. Approximations involved in Mazziotti's recently proposed “formal solution for reconstruction” are identified. The behavior of his scheme, and of an older one in which all cumulants beyond the second are neglected, are illustrated by detailed examination of a model problem. The limited experience provided by this example casts doubt as to the probable effectiveness of Mazziotti's reconstruction scheme. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2002

Abstract The methods of quantum chemistry and solid state theory to solve the many‐body problem are reviewed. We start with the definitions of reduced density matrices, their properties (contraction sum rules, spectral resolutions, cumulant expansion, and N‐representability), and their determining equations (contracted Schrödinger equations), and we summarize recent extensions and generalizations of the traditional quantum chemical methods, of the density functional theory, and of the quasiparticle theory: from finite to extended systems (incremental method), from density‐to‐density matrix (density matrix functional theory), from weak to strong correlation (dynamical mean field theory), from homogeneous (Kimball–Overhauser approach) to inhomogeneous and finite systems. Measures of the correlation strength are discussed. The cumulant two‐body reduced density matrix proves to be a key quantity. Its spectral resolution contains geminals, possibly the solutions of an approximate effective two‐body equation, and we sketch the idea of how its contraction sum rule can be used for a variational treatment. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. n‐Electron problem and its formulation in terms ofk‐particle density cumulants
Werner Kutzelnigg
Abstract Approaches to the solution of then‐electron problem in terms of the reducedk‐particle density matricesγkor their cumulantsλkare critically reviewed. The advantages of a cumulant‐based theory are outlined, especially its extensivity, which implies a connected‐diagram theorem. A perturbative analysis of the hierarchy ofk‐particle approximations, based on the irreducible contracted Schrödinger equations (ICSEk) (which are conditions for the stationarity of the energy), reveals that the three‐particle approximation is necessary to obtain the energy correct to the MP2 (second‐order Møller–Plesset) level. This disqualifies the naive use of thek‐particle hierarchy, in a linearly converging iterative scheme, as ineffective (compared, e.g., to coupled‐cluster theory). A promising alternative is, however, a quadratically convergent iterative scheme based on successive unitary transformations in Fock space. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2003

Pursuit ofN-representability for the contracted Schrödinger equation through density-matrix reconstruction
David A. Mazziotti
The solution of N-representability for the two-particle reduced density matrix (2-RDM) is intimately connected through the contracted Schr\"odinger equation with the problem of reconstructing the 3- and 4-RDM's from the 2-RDM [D. A. Mazziotti, Phys. Rev. A 57, 4219 (1998)]. We derive an explicit formula for building the 3-RDM from the 2-RDM which significantly improves the accuracy of the 3-RDM cumulant expansion. Calculations indicate that the improvement is better than that achieved by the correction of Nakatsuji and Yasuda (NY) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1039 (1996); Phys. Rev. A 56, 2648 (1997)]. We also present a more efficient formulation of the NY correction. Both the present and NY reconstructions are shown to satisfy the particle-hole duality. Comparison of the reconstruction methods is made through several molecules LiH, ${\mathrm{BeH}}_{2},$ ${\mathrm{BH}}_{3},$ ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O},$ and ${\mathrm{CH}}_{4},$ as well as systems with more general pairwise correlation.

Theoretical Analysis of Two Reconstruction Schemes of Reduced Density Matrices
X GAO, Feiwu Chen
Abstract The effectiveness of the approach for systematical reconstruction of higher order reduced density matrices with lower order ones, which was developed by Chen ( Science in China B , 2006, 49 : 402), was compared theoretically with that of Mazziotti's method through Harris model, by omitting the cumulant terms 3 Δ M , 4Δ M in the latter method and the normal product terms 3 Δ, 4 Δ in the former method, it was found that the errors from both approaches were comparable. As a better approximation, if only fourth-order terms 4Δ M and 4 Δ in both methods are neglected whereas the third-order terms 3Δ M and 3 Δ are computed from their cor-responding fourth-order terms 4Δ M and 4 Δ, respectively, through contractions, the results calculated with Chen's approach not only have the correct signs but also are very close to the exact normal products 3 Δ whereas some of the results calculated with Mazziotti's method do not even have the correct signs with respect to the exact cumulants 3Δ M .

3,5‐contracted Schrödinger equation: Determining quantum energies and reduced density matrices without wave functions
David A. Mazziotti
Through the 3,5-contracted Schrödinger equation (3,5-CSchE) quantum energies and 3-particle reduced density matrices (3-RDMs) are determined directly without wave functions. Since the 3,5-CSchE involves the 5-RDM, its solution is indeterminate without N-representability conditions. However, the indeterminacy of the 3,5-CSchE may be removed through a reconstruction strategy for building the 4- and 5-RDMs from the 3-RDM. We present a systematic procedure for obtaining corrections for Valdemoro's reconstruction functionals from two complementary approaches, the particle–hole duality and the theory of cumulants. With the cumulants we are able to demonstrate that we have obtained all terms in the reconstruction functionals which may be written as antisymmetric products of the lower rdms. The cumulants allow us to understand the reconstruction functionals in terms of a renormalized many-body perturbation theory. The reconstruction functionals also lead to a natural generalization of Wick's theorem for evaluating expectation values of fermionic annihilation and creation operators with respect to correlated reference states. Previous work [Phys. Rev. A 57, 4219 (1998)] has explored the determination of correlation energy and 2-RDMs through the 2,4-CSchE, also known as the density equation. Because the reconstruction functionals employed with the 3,5-CSchE depend only on the antisymmetric products of lower RDMs in constrast to those used with the 2,4-CSchE, the 3,5-CSchE method presented here does not require the solution of systems of linear equations during reconstruction or the storage of the reconstructed RDMs. Application of the 3,5-CSchE technique to a quasi-spin model generates ground-state energies and 2-RDMs similar in accuracy to single–double configuration interaction (SDCI). We employ a simple iterative procedure for the solution of the 3,5-CSchE without traditional diagonalization. The CSchE techniques offer an approximate solution of the N-representability problem and a new approach to electron correlation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 70: 557–570, 1998
