Abstract

Aim of this work was to investigate nonlinear absorption of pump radiation in UV spectral range of Ce 3+ :LiCaAlF 6 crystalline active medium. We were able to evaluate excited state absorption cross-section at pump wavelength (266 nm) and recombination probabilities by means of computer simulation.

Er3+ excited-state absorption in an erbium-doped silica fiber at the wavelengths 1490–1580 and 978 nm

The spectral features of Er 3+ excited-state absorption (ESA) in an erbium-doped silica fiber (EF) at the telecom wavelengths 1490–1580 nm and at the wavelength 978 nm are reported. The measurement of the EF nonlinear transmission coefficient upon pumping the fiber in these spectral ranges, supplied with a theoretical background, allows one to obtain the spectrally dependent ESA parameter for the EF, which is defined as the ratio of the ESA to the ground-state absorption cross section.

All-optical modulation by continuous wave light using two-color excited-state absorption at visible wavelengths

Jinhyeok Hong, Heongkyu Ju

We demonstrated all-optical modulation with a nonlinear medium, i.e., indigo carmine, an aromatic conjugated structure with delocalized π-electrons, using non-high power continuous wave light for pump and probe of different visible wavelengths. Pump-induced probe transmission increase occurred through absorption saturation of probe light by pump-induced linear and nonlinear absorption including two-color excited-state absorption (ESA). The two-color ESA occurred only when both pump light and probe light co-propagated through a medium, leading to nearly pump power-independent increase in probe transmission for appropriately chosen wavelengths of pump and probe light, given the optical transition structure of electronic energy levels in the medium.

Investigations on Excited-State Absorption in Pr3+ Doped Fluorozirconate Fibers

A. Saı̈ssy, Eric Maurice, Gérard Monnom +1 more

Excited state absorption (E.S.A.) in Pr3+ doped fluorozirconate fibers pumped at 1012 nm is investigated by the pump-probe beam method. Probe wavelengths are successively 830, 780 and 1310 nm, we measure both the attenuation of the probe beam when 1012 nm pumping is applied and the modulation of the visible or 1.3 μm fluorescence when the probe is lauched into the fiber. Modelisation of these measurements allows us deducing the magnitude of E.S.A. cross-sections at 830, 780 and 1012 nm.

Excited-state absorption spectroscopy of Nd3+:SrF2crystals in the 1280 — 1320 nm spectral wavelength range

The excited-state absorption (ESA) in Nd 3+ :SrF 2 crystals was investigated in the 1280 — 1320 nm spectral wavelength range by selective laser excitation. It was found that, on excitation at wavelengths of 743 and 800.5 nm, there is no ESA in the ranges 1304 — 1309 and 1295 — 1297 nm. Weak ESA bands are observed in the 1297 — 1304 and 1309 — 1320 nm ranges and the differential ESA cross section does not exceed 0.3 × 10 -21 cm 2 . The results indicate that the ESA does not preclude the use of an Nd 3+ :SrF 2 crystal as the amplifying medium in the wavelength range 1280 — 1320 nm.

Investigation of Absorption Dynamics From the Excited State 5I7 of Holmium Ions in Optical Silica-Based Fibers

Serafima A. Filatova, Alisa E. Fale, Vladimir A. Kamynin +7 more

Absorption of continuous wave and pulsed resonance radiation at a wavelength of 1.6 µm at the upward transition from the excited state$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$of holmium (Ho3+) ions in silica-based fiber has been studied. Analysis of experimental and simulated data of the absorption dynamics for the case of pulsed pumping of Ho-doped fiber allowed us to determine the previously unknown value of the absorption cross-section at the transition$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}{ \to }^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{5}$as 1.9×10–21cm2. It allowed us to correctly simulate the relaxation process of the$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$level population averaged over the fiber length in the presence of stationary resonance radiation. The effect of pulsed resonance radiation with different peak powers (10 and 100 W) and pulse duration of 1μs on the stationary active medium was considered. The mutual influence of the Ho-doped fiber characteristics and the resonance radiation at a wavelength of 1.6 μm was found. This allows the resonance radiation to be used as an attenuator or modulator of laser radiation at the$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{8}{ \to }^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$transition in Ho-doped fibers.

Optical-absorption and photoionization measurements from the excited states of Ce 3 + : Y 3 Al 5 O 12

The optical transitions in ${\mathrm{Ce}}^{3+}$:${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}$${\mathrm{Al}}_{5}$${\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ from the lowest 5d excited state of the ${\mathrm{Ce}}^{3+}$ ion to the host conduction band have been investigated. Two spatially overlapped and time-sequenced laser pulses were used to observe directly the excited-state absorption (ESA) and the two-step photoionization of the cerium ions. The peak cross section of the ESA transition is (1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}17}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ at 700 nm. The ESA spectrum was measured from 600 to 880 nm and is used to construct an energy-level diagram for the ${\mathrm{Ce}}^{3+}$ ions relative to the energy-band states of the ${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}$${\mathrm{Al}}_{5}$${\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ host. The energy gap between the lowest relaxed 5d state and the conduction-band edge is estimated to be 10 000 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$. Strong-probe saturation measurements indicate a slow and inefficient back-transfer of excitation to the cerium ions following the ESA. Photoconductivity measurements were used to confirm the two-step photoionization of the cerium ions.
