Path selection rule in matrix product systems

Abstract

A matrix product system chooses a special path in the phase diagram to undergo a quantum phase transition (QPT) and shows different behaviors compared with a traditional QPT, such as the symmetry behavior of some physical observables described in this paper. An equation is established, which (i) helps one to understand the special behaviors of a matrix product state (MPS)-QPTs, and (ii) can be used to detect the QPT point of a MPS, much simpler than usual procedures of calculating the transfer matrix or density matrix of the system. The equation acts as a selection rule for the path of the MPS-QPT and is believed to be the essence of distinguishing a MPS-QPT from a traditional QPT. Furthermore, the discontinuity of the derivative of an observable is found to be connected directly to the turning point in the path of the MPS, but not the phase boundary point in the phase diagram, though the two are in accordance with each other in many cases.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Matrix Product States

Jing-Min Zhu

We present a new general and much simpler scheme to construct various quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in spin chain systems with matrix product ground states. By use of the scheme we take into account one kind of matrix product state (MPS) QPT and provide a concrete model. We also study the properties of the concrete example and show that a kind of QPT appears, accompanied by the appearance of the discontinuity of the parity absent block physical observable, diverging correlation length only for the parity absent block operator, and other properties which are that the fixed point of the transition point is an isolated intermediate-coupling fixed point of renormalization flow and the entanglement entropy of a half-infinite chain is discontinuous.

Quantum phase transitions about parity breaking in matrix product systems

Jing-Min Zhu

According to our scheme to construct quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in spin chain systems with matrix product ground states, we first successfully combine matrix product state (MPS) QPTs with spontaneous symmetry breaking. For a concrete model, we take into account a kind of MPS QPTs accompanied by spontaneous parity breaking, though for either side of the critical point the GS is typically unique, and show that the kind of MPS QPTs occur only in the thermodynamic limit and are accompanied by the appearance of singularities, diverging correlation length, vanishing energy gap and the entanglement entropy of a half-infinite chain not only staying finite but also whose first derivative discontinuous.

Quantum phase transitions in matrix product states of one-dimensional spin-½ chains

Jing-Min Zhu

For the matrix product system of a one-dimensional spin-½ chain, we present a new model of quantum phase transitions and find that in the thermodynamic limit, both sides of the critical point are respectively described by phases |Ψ a 〉 = |1...1〉 representing all particles spin up and |Ψ b 〉 = |0...0〉 representing all particles spin down, while the phase transition point is an isolated intermediate-coupling point where the two phases coexist equally, which is described by the so-called N -qubit maximally entangled GHZ state . At the critical point, the physical quantities including the entanglement are not discontinuous and the matrix product system has long-range correlation and N -qubit maximal entanglement. We believe that our work is helpful for having a comprehensive understanding of quantum phase transitions in matrix product states of one-dimensional spin chains and of potential directive significance to the preparation and control of one-dimensional spin lattice models with stable coherence and N -qubit maximal entanglement.

Classifying phases protected by matrix product operator symmetries using matrix product states

José Garre-Rubio, Laurens Lootens, András Molnár

We classify the different ways in which matrix product states (MPSs) can stay invariant under the action of matrix product operator (MPO) symmetries. This is achieved through a local characterization of how the MPSs, that generate a ground space, remain invariant under a global MPO symmetry. This characterization yields a set of quantities satisfying the coupled pentagon equations, associated with a module category over the fusion category that describes the MPO symmetry. Equivalence classes of these quantities provide complete invariants for an MPO symmetry protected phase: they are robust under continuous deformations of the MPS tensor, and two phases with the same equivalence class can be connected by a symmetric gapped path. Our techniques match and extend the known renormalization fixed point classifications and facilitate the numerical study of these systems. For MPO symmetries described by a group, we recover the symmetry protected topological order classification for unique and degenerate ground states. Moreover, we study the interplay between time reversal symmetry and an MPO symmetry and we also provide examples of our classification, together with explicit constructions based on groups. Finally, we elaborate on the connection between our setup and gapped boundaries of two-dimensional topological systems, where MPO symmetries also play a key role.

Matrix Product State and Quantum Phase Transitions in the Extended One-Dimensional Quantum Compass Model

Guanghua Liu, Wei Li, Wen‐Long You +2 more

The matrix product state (MPS) is utilized to study the ground state properties and quantum phase transitions (QPTs) of the one-dimensional quantum compass model (QCM). The MPS wavefunctions are argued to be very efficient descriptions of QCM ground states, and are numerically determined by imaginary time projections. The ground state energy, correlations, quantum entanglement and its spectrum, local and nonlocal order parameters, etc., are calculated and studied in details. It is revealed that the bipartite and block entanglement entropies, as well as the nearest neighbor correlation functions can be used to detect the second-order QPTs, but not the first-order ones, while fidelity detections can recognize both. The entanglement spectrum is extracted from the MPS wavefunction, and found to be doubly degenerate in disordered phases of QCM, where non-local string order parameters exist. Moreover, with linearized tensor renormalization group method, the specific heat curves are evaluated and their low temperature behaviors are investigated.
