Abstract

We classify the different ways in which matrix product states (MPSs) can stay invariant under the action of matrix product operator (MPO) symmetries. This is achieved through a local characterization of how the MPSs, that generate a ground space, remain invariant under a global MPO symmetry. This characterization yields a set of quantities satisfying the coupled pentagon equations, associated with a module category over the fusion category that describes the MPO symmetry. Equivalence classes of these quantities provide complete invariants for an MPO symmetry protected phase: they are robust under continuous deformations of the MPS tensor, and two phases with the same equivalence class can be connected by a symmetric gapped path. Our techniques match and extend the known renormalization fixed point classifications and facilitate the numerical study of these systems. For MPO symmetries described by a group, we recover the symmetry protected topological order classification for unique and degenerate ground states. Moreover, we study the interplay between time reversal symmetry and an MPO symmetry and we also provide examples of our classification, together with explicit constructions based on groups. Finally, we elaborate on the connection between our setup and gapped boundaries of two-dimensional topological systems, where MPO symmetries also play a key role.

Classifying Symmetric and Symmetry-Broken Spin Chain Phases with Anomalous Group Actions

Jose Garre Rubio, András Molnár, Yoshiko Ogata

Abstract We consider the classification problem of quantum spin chains invariant under local-decomposable group actions, covering matrix product unitaries (MPUs), using an operator algebraic approach. We focus on finite group symmetries hosting both symmetric and symmetry-broken phases. The local-decomposable group actions we consider have a 3-cocycle class of the symmetry group associated with them. We derive invariants for our classification that naturally cover one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. We prove that these invariants coincide with the ones of [3] using matrix product state (MPS) techniques, by explicitly working out the GNS representation of MPSs and MPUs, resulting in a useful dictionary between both approaches that could be of independent interest.

Classification of dipolar symmetry-protected topological phases: Matrix product states, stabilizer Hamiltonians, and finite tensor gauge theories

Ho Tat Lam

We classify one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by dipole symmetries. A dipole symmetry comprises two sets of symmetry generators: charge and dipole operators, which together form a nontrivial algebra with translations. Using matrix product states (MPS), we show that for a $G$ dipole symmetry with $G$ a finite Abelian group, the one-dimensional dipolar SPTs are classified by the group ${H}^{2}[G\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}G,U(1)]/{H}^{2}{[G,U(1)]}^{2}$. Because of the symmetry algebra, the MPS tensors exhibit an unusual property, prohibiting the fractionalization of charge operators at the edges. For each phase in the classification, we explicitly construct a stabilizer Hamiltonian to realize the SPT phase and derive the response field theories by coupling the dipole symmetry to background tensor gauge fields. These field theories generalize the Dijkgraaf-Witten theories to twisted finite tensor gauge theories.

Matrix Product States for Modulated Topological Phases: Crystalline Equivalence Principle and Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Constraints

Shang-Qiang Ning, Hiromi Ebisu, Ho Tat Lam

Modulated symmetries are internal symmetries that act in a spatially non-uniform manner. Consequently, when a modulated symmetry $G_{\text{int}}$ is combined with a spatial symmetry $G_{\text{sp}}$, the total symmetry group takes the form of a semidirect product $G=G_{\text{int}}\rtimes G_{\text{sp}}$. Using matrix product states, we classify topological phases protected by modulated symmetries together with spatial symmetries in one spatial dimension. We show that these modulated symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are classified by $H^{2}(G,U(1)_s)$, in agreement with the crystalline equivalence principle, which states that SPT phases protected by symmetries involving spatial elements are in one-to-one correspondence with internal SPT phases protected by the same symmetries, viewed as acting internally. Furthermore, we provide a matrix product state derivation of the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for the corresponding internal SPT phases, which enables us to construct an explicit correspondence between modulated SPT phases and internal SPT phases. As applications of this classification, we prove a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem for modulated symmetries that forbids the existence of symmetric short-ranged entangled ground state, as well as an SPT-LSM constraint that enforces nontrivial entanglement in the SPT ground state. Finally, we use the classification to establish a similar LSM-type constraints for non-invertible Kramers-Wannier reflection symmetries.

Tensor network formulation of symmetry protected topological phases in mixed states

Hanyu Xue, Jong Yeon Lee, Yimu Bao

We define and classify symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in mixed states based on the tensor network formulation of the density matrix. In one dimension, we introduce strong injective matrix product density operators (MPDO), which describe a broad class of short-range correlated mixed states, including the locally decohered SPT states. We map strong injective MPDO to a pure state in the doubled Hilbert space and define the SPT phases according to the cohomology class of the symmetry group in the doubled state. Although the doubled state exhibits an enlarged symmetry, the possible SPT phases are also constrained by the Hermiticity and the semi-positivity of the density matrix. We here obtain a complete classification of SPT phases with a direct product of strong $G$ and weak $K$ unitary symmetry given by the cohomology group $H^2(G, \text{U}(1))\oplus H^1(K, H^1(G, \text{U}(1)))$. The SPT phases in our definition are preserved under symmetric local circuits consisting of non-degenerate channels. This motivates an alternative definition of SPT phases according to the equivalence class of mixed states under a ``one-way" connection using symmetric non-degenerate channels. In locally purifiable MPDO with strong symmetry, we prove that this alternative definition reproduces the cohomology classification. We further extend our results to two-dimensional mixed states described by strong semi-injective tensor network density operators and classify the possible SPT phases.

One-dimensional symmetric phases protected by frieze symmetries

Bram Vancraeynest-De Cuiper, Jacob C. Bridgeman, Nicolas Dewolf +2 more

We make a systematic study of symmetry-protected topological gapped phases of quantum spin chains in the presence of the frieze space groups in one dimension using matrix product states. Here, the spatial symmetries of the one-dimensional lattice are considered together with an additional ``vertical reflection,'' which we take to be an on-site ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. We identify seventeen distinct non-trivial phases, define canonical forms, and compare the topological indices obtained from the MPS analysis with the group cohomological predictions. We furthermore construct explicit renormalization group fixed-point wave functions for symmetry-protected topological phases with global on-site symmetries, possibly combined with time reversal and parity symmetry. En route, we demonstrate how group cohomology can be computed using the Smith normal form.

Matrix Product States for Modulated Symmetries: SPT, LSM, and Beyond

Amogh Anakru, Linhao Li, Sarvesh Srinivasan +1 more

Matrix product states (MPS) provide a powerful framework for characterizing one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of matter and for formulating Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM)-type constraints. Here we generalize the MPS formalism to translationally invariant systems with general modulated symmetries. We show that the standard symmetry "push-through" condition for conventional global symmetry must be revised to account for symmetry modulation, and we derive the appropriate generalized condition. Using this generalized push-through structure, we classify one-dimensional SPT phases with modulated symmetries and formulate LSM-type constraints within the same MPS-based framework.
