Hybrid optical bistability based on voltage-controlled changes of persistent spectral holes

Electric field induced changes of the absorption in the center of a persistent spectral hole were used to operate a hybrid optical bistable device. The hole was burned in the inhomogeneously broadened S0–S1 transition of perylene in an amorphous polyvinylbutyral matrix. The external feedback was realized by detecting the zero-phonon fluorescence light of the dye molecules with a photomultiplier and applying the amplified voltage to the sample.

Applications of Electric Field Effects on Persistent Spectral Holes

Max Maier

We studied the effects of an external electric field on persistent spectral holes in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition of dye molecules embedded in crystalline or disordered solids.1 The results are applied to optical data storage in the electric field dimension, modulation and pulse forming of laser beams,1,2 and hybrid optical bistability.

Spectral Hole Burning of Eu2+ in Selectively Doped CaF2:Eu/CdF2 Superlattices

Gastev, S. V., A.Yu. Khilko, Nikolai S. Sokolov +2 more

It is demonstrated that persistent hole burning in the zero-phonon line of Eu2+ in SLs of CaF2:Eu/CdF2 with uniformly doped CaF2 layers is mainly due to tunneling of electrons from the 4f65d excited state of Eu2 to the conduction band of adjacent CdF2 layer. However in selectively doped suoerlattices (SLs), the two-step photoionization process dominates in the formation of spectral holes. Two mechanisms of spectral hole broadening were discussed. These are the Stark-shifting of the Eu2 f-d transition energy induced by internal electric field and phonon assisted transitions.
