Towards coherent control of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well

Martin Holthaus

A type of solution to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for periodically driven Bose-Einstein condensates is introduced, which generalizes the familiar single-particle Floquet states. These solutions lead to the prediction that the onset of self-trapping of a condensate in a periodically modulated double well can be systematically controlled. This mean-field prediction is confirmed on the N-particle level, and explained by a pairing mechanism.

Nonlinear Floquet solutions of two periodically driven Bose-Einstein condensates

Qiongtao Xie

We investigate the effect of an external periodic driving on the self-trapping transitions of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential. Exact nonlinear Floquet solutions are obtained when the driving parameters satisfy certain conditions. These solutions can give an analytic demonstration of the ac control of self-trapping transitions.

Nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a driven double-well potential

Qiongtao Xie, Wenhua Hai

We investigate nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. A multiple time scale method is used to obtain the nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies in both weak and strong nonlinearity regimes. It is shown that there are more nonlinear Floquet states without linear counterparts in the strong nonlinearity regime than in the weak nonlinearity regime, and they are phase-locked to an integer multiple of the external driving frequency. The validity of the effective description in the two different regimes is discussed. The stability criterion for these nonlinear Floquet states is found analytically and confirmed numerically.
