Abstract

Correlation function of the concentration fluctuations near threshold of bistability origin is obtained in linear approximation. Anomalous large scattering of light in this region is predicted.

Region of phase transition in optical bistable systems

Iurii Gudyma

The threshold bistable system was investigated near a threshold of switching between phases. It was shown, that in spite of the fact that the equation, that describes this system does not have the stable localized structures among the solutions, envelopes of these solutions can form solitons of a nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Dynamic critical index was calculated near this point in the second order (epsilon) . It characterizes cross-section of scattering on fluctuation modes.

Optical bistability: A self-consistent analysis of fluctuations and the spectrum of scattered light

G. S. Agarwal, Lorenzo M. Narducci, Robert Gilmore +1 more

The main purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of the atomic fluctuations and the spectrum of the light transmitted by an absorptive bistable device. To this end we develop an approximation scheme based on the so-called system-size expansion and apply it to the quantum-mechanical Langevin equations for the atomic fluctuation operators. The Bonifacio-Lugiato mean-field equations for bistability are derived from the lowest-order approximation to the system-size expansion, while the atomic correlation functions result from the next-higher-order expansion. The calculated spectrum of the transmitted light exhibits line narrowing near the bistable thresholds, discontinuous formation of sidebands along the high-transmission branch of the device, and hysteresis effects.

Effect of laser intensity fluctuations on laser linewidth

Ning Lu

We study the linewidth of a one-photon laser through the approach of the two-time correlation function. Our numerical calculations cover the regions of below, near, and above threshold. Well below threshold, the laser linewidth decreases linearly with increasing linear gain. Near and above threshold, in comparison with the approximate linewidth given by the phase-diffusion coefficient at the mean photon number (which is inversely proportional to the laser intensity---the Schawlow-Townes formula), we find that the laser intensity fluctuations increase the laser linewidth and that the Schawlow-Townes formula is valid only when the mean photon number is large and the photon-number variance is much smaller than the square of the mean photon number. Near threshold, the laser linewidth can be twice as large as that given by the phase-diffusion coefficient at the mean photon number (i.e., twice as large as that given by the Schawlow-Townes formula).
