Spin Squeezing in an Ensemble of Atoms Illuminated with Squeezed Light

Abstract

We propose an experimentally feasible way to generate spin squeezing in an ensemble of V-type atoms. The proposal involves absorption of a squeezed light beam, and it does not require a large solid angle to be occupied by squeezed light. 50% of the amount of squeezing of the optical field can be transferred onto spin squeezing of the excited atomic states. The analogy with the input-output theory for quantum fields is used to elucidate this result. An experimental setup for generation and detection of spin squeezing within magnetic or hf manifolds is outlined.

Spin squeezing in two-level systems

L. Vernac, M. Pinard, E. Giacobino

Using a quantum theory for an ensemble of two-level atoms driven by a field in an optical cavity, we show that the spin associated with the atomic ensemble can be squeezed. Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: on the one hand, self-squeezing of the spin when the input field is a coherent one and the atomic ensemble exhibits a large nonlinearity; and on the other hand, squeezing transfer from an incoming squeezed field when the atomic ensemble has a quasilinear behavior.

Concurrent Spin Squeezing and Light Squeezing in an Atomic Ensemble

Shenchao Jin, Junlei Duan, Youwei Zhang +7 more

Squeezed spin states and squeezed light are both key resources for quantum metrology and quantum information science, but have been separately investigated in experiments so far. Simultaneous generation of these two types of quantum states in one experiment setup is intriguing but remains a challenging goal. Here, we propose a novel protocol based on judiciously engineered symmetric atom-light interaction, and report proof-of-principle experimental results of concurrent spin squeezing of 0.61±0.09 dB and light squeezing of 0.65_{-0.10}^{+0.11} dB in a hot atomic ensemble. The squeezing process is deterministic, yielding fixed squeezing directions for both the light field and the collective atomic spin. Furthermore, the squeezed light modes lie in the multiple frequency sidebands of a single spatial mode. This new type of dual squeezed state is applicable for quantum enhanced metrology and quantum networks. Our method can be extended to other quantum platforms such as optomechanics, cold atoms, and trapped ions.

Mapping a quantum state of light onto atoms

Jan Hald, Eugene Simon Polzik

We derive a theory for mapping a quantum state of nonclassical light onto a collective, excited atomic state via complete absorption of the light. We allow for an arbitrary polarization-squeezed state of light and an arbitrary spin of the atomic ground state. The present derivation thereby generalizes the results of Kuzmich et al . We compare the theory to the recently published experimental results on atomic spin squeezing.

Atomic spin squeezing in a Λ system

Using a quantum theory for an ensemble of three-level atoms $(\ensuremath{\Lambda})$ placed in an optical cavity and driven by electromagnetic fields, we show that the long-lived spin associated with the ground-state sublevels can be squeezed. Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: self-spin squeezing, when the input fields are coherent states and the atomic ensemble exhibits a large nonlinearity; squeezing transfer approaching 100%, when one of the incoming fields is squeezed.

We describe an approach to mapping of a quantum polarization state of free propagating light on a collective spin of an atomic ensemble. Recent experimental results on generation of a macroscopic spin squeezed ensemble of cold atoms via interaction with squeezed light are analysed in detail.

Atomic spin squeezing in a Lambda system

Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: self-spin squeezing, when the input fields are coherent states and the atomic ensemble exhibit a large non-linearity; squeezing transfer, when one of the incoming fields is squeezed.
