Abstract

We present the application of a fast, explicit time-marching scheme for the solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in cylindrical geometry. The scheme is validated on simple analytical tests and demonstrated for two situations of physical interest in experiments on the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of trapped alkali-metal vapors. It is tested by reproducing known results on the free expansion of a BEC after removing a cylindrical trap, and it is then used to address the formation of matter-wave pulses that result from gravity-induced transport of a condensate in an optical potential.

Explicit solutions to an effective Gross–Pitaevskii equation: One-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate in specific traps

Emmanuel Kengne, X. X. Liu, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

An effective Gross–Pitaevskii equation, which describes the dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates in specific potential traps, is considered, and new families of exact solutions are reported, which include periodic and solitary waves. The solutions are applied to the description of BEC patterns trapped in optical-lattice potentials.

Vortex-ring solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for an axisymmtrically trapped Bose–Einstein condensate

We propose a numerical scheme for obtaining the stationary vortex-ring solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation for an axisymmetrically trapped Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). The effective energy functional and the associated GP equation are derived by assuming a trial phase profile for the wavefunction that is subject to the condition of circulation quantization on the rz plane. The wavefunction of the vortex ring is determined by solving the ground state of the effective GP equation numerically. Application of our method to the formation of a three-dimensional Skyrmion in a trapped two-component BEC is demonstrated.

A simple Dufort‐Frankel‐type scheme for the Gross‐Pitaevskii equation of Bose‐Einstein condensates on different geometries

Ming‐Chih Lai, Chung‐Yin Huang, Te‐Sheng Lin

Abstract We develop a simple Dufort‐Frankel‐type scheme for solving the time‐dependent Gross‐Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The GPE is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing the Bose‐Einstein condensation (BEC) at very low temperature. Three different geometries including 1D spherically symmetric, 2D cylindrically symmetric, and 3D anisotropic Cartesian domains are considered. The present finite difference method is explicit, linearly unconditional stable and is able to handle the coordinate singularities in a natural way. Furthermore, the scheme is time reversible and satisfies a discrete analogue of density conservation law. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2004

Dynamics of Analytical Matter-Wave Solutions in One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates with Two- and Three-Body Interactions

Hai-Qin Jin, Jun-Rong He, Bin Xu +1 more

Using the F-expansion method, we present analytical matter-wave solutions to Bose-Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interactions through the generalized onedimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent coefficients, for the experimentally relevant quadratic potential strength. Various shapes of the analytical matter-wave solutions which have important applications of physical interest are studied in detail. In particular, the matter-wave solitons are obtained in the quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation model, which may be produced by tuning the cubic nonlinearity to zero via the Feschbach resonance technique. Direct numerical simulation has been performed to show the stable region of the matter-wave soliton.

Using the F-expansion method we present analytical matter-wave solutions to Bose—Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interactions through the generalized three-dimensional Gross—Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent coefficients, for the periodically time-varying interactions and quadratic potential strength. Such solutions exist under certain conditions, and impose constraints on the functions describing potential strength, nonlinearities, and gain (loss). Projected Gross–Pitaevskii Equation for Ring-Shaped Bose–Einstein Condensates

O. O. Prikhodko, Y. M. Bidasyuk

We propose an alternative implementation of the projected Gross–Pitaevskki equation adapted for a numerical modeling of the atomic Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidally shaped potential. We present an accurate efficient scheme to evaluate the required matrix elements and to calculate tthe ime evolution of the matter wave field. We analyze the stability and accuracy of the developed method for equilibrium and nonequilibrium solutions in a ring-shaped trap with an additional barrier potential corresponding to recent experimental realizations.
