Multi-wave-mixing-induced nonlinear effects in an electromagnetically induced grating

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, Pradipta Panchadhyayee, Indranil Bayal +2 more

We propose a multi-field-coupled atomic model that exhibits controllable $symmetric$ and $asymmetric$ evolution of significantly enhanced diffraction peaks in an opto-atomic grating at far-field regime. Such results are obtained by the linear and nonlinear modulation of the intensities of the diffraction peaks as a result of multi-wave-mixing-induced modification of spatially modulated coherence in a closed four-level atomic system. Novelty of the results lies in predicting super symmetric alignment of the diffraction peaks due to the dominance of the amplitude part of the grating-transfer-function at the condition of exact atom-field resonance, which is unique to the present model. Efficacy of the present scheme is to apply it in producing nonlinear light generated by four-wave-mixing-induced control of spatially modulated coherence effect. The work also finds its importance for its applicability in the field of high-precision atomic lithography.

Controlling multi-wave mixing signals via photonic band gap of electromagnetically induced absorption grating in atomic media

Yiqi Zhang, Zhenkun Wu, Xin Yao +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate dressed multi-wave mixing (MWM) and the reflection of the probe beam due to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) grating can coexist in a five-level atomic ensemble. The reflection is derived from the photonic band gap (PBG) of EIA grating, which is much broader than the PBG of EIT grating. Therefore, EIA-type PBG can reflect more energy from probe than EIT-type PBG does, which can effectively affect the MWM signal. The EIA-type as well as EIT-type PBG can be controlled by multiple parameters including the frequency detunings, propagation angles and powers of the involved light fields. Also, the EIA-type PBG by considering both the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive indices is also investigated. The theoretical analysis agrees well with the experimental results. This investigation has potential applications in all-optical communication and information processing.

Electromagnetically induced gratings in a degenerate open two-level system

George C. Cardoso, J. W. R. Tabosa

We have experimentally investigated laser diffraction on electromagnetically induced gratings in a degenerate open two-level system. The experiment employs the standard backward four-wave mixing configuration and the open ${6S}_{1/2}(F=4)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{6P}_{3/2}{(F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=4)$ transition of cold cesium atoms. Population and coherence gratings are accessed for different relative polarizations of the incident laser beams. Natural and subnatural linewidths are observed depending on which frequency of the incident beams is scanned and reveal the effect of the atomic motion on the diffraction spectra. A simple theoretical model using a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system is in reasonable agreement with the observed results and allowed us to make a close connection with the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency.
