General diffusion equation for light-induced drift

Gerard Nienhuis, Stanisław Kryszewski

We derive a general diffusion equation for the density of an atomic vapor immersed in a buffer gas and irradiated by nearly resonant light. The combination of velocity-selective excitation with state-dependent rates of velocity-changing collisions then gives rise to a drift term, and at the same time the diffusion tensor becomes anisotropic and intensity dependent. Both the effect of light-induced drift and diffusive pulling of atoms by the light are described by this diffusion equation in a consistent and correlated fashion.

EIT and diffusion of atomic coherence

Irina V. Novikova, Yanhong Xiao, David F. Phillips +1 more

We study experimentally the effect of diffusion of Rb atoms on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a buffer gas vapour cell. In particular, we find that diffusion of atomic coherence in and out of the laser beam plays a crucial role in determining the EIT resonance lineshape and the stored light lifetime.

Observation of recoil-induced resonances and electromagnetically induced absorption of diffuse light by cold atoms

Wenzhuo Zhang, Hua-Dong Cheng, Liang Liu +1 more

In this paper we report an experiment on the observation of the recoil-induced resonances (RIR) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) of cold $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ atoms in diffuse light. The pump light of the RIR and the EIA comes from the diffuse light in an integrating sphere, which also serves the cooling light. We measured the RIR and the EIA signal varying with the detuning of the diffuse laser light, and also measured the number and the temperature of the cold atoms at the different detunings. The mechanism of RIR and EIA in the configuration with diffuse-light pumping and laser probing are discussed, and the difference between the nonlinear spectra of cold atoms in a diffuse-light cooling system and in a magneto-optical trap is studied.
