Invariant operator theory for the single-photon energy in time-varying media

Abstract

After the birth of quantum mechanics, the notion in physics that the frequency of light is the only factor that determines the energy of a single photon has played a fundamental role. However, under the assumption that the theory of Lewis–Riesenfeld invariants is applicable in quantum optics, it is shown in the present work that this widely accepted notion is valid only for light described by a time-independent Hamiltonian, i.e., for light in media satisfying the conditions, ε(i) = ε(0), μ( t ) = μ(0), and σ( t ) = 0 simultaneously. The use of the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant operator method in quantum optics leads to a marvelous result: the energy of a single photon propagating through time-varying linear media exhibits nontrivial time dependence without a change of frequency.

QUANTUM PROPERTIES OF LIGHT IN LINEAR MEDIA WITH TIME-DEPENDENT PARAMETERS BY LEWIS–RIESENFELD INVARIANT OPERATOR METHOD

Jeong Ryeol Choi, Kyu Hwang Yeon

We investigated exact quantum states of the light confined in cubes filled with conductive media whose parameters are explicitly dependent on time and the light propagating under periodic boundary condition by making use of the LR (Lewis–Riesenfeld) invariant operator method. The choice of Coulomb gauge in the charge free space allowed us to evaluate quantized electric and magnetic fields by expanding only the vector potential, since the scalar potential is zero. We also described the fields with a spectrum of continuous mode, which can be obtained by setting the side L to infinity.

Coherent and squeezed states of light in linear media with time-dependent parameters by Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant operator method

Jeong Ryeol Choi

We investigated coherent and squeezed states of light in linear media whose parameters are explicitly dependent on time by making use of the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant operator method. Not only the field strengths but also the fluctuations of the fields both in coherent and in squeezed states are decayed with time. The relative noise of the field strengths are calculated in coherent state. Quantum statistical properties of the chaotic field are investigated. We applied our theory to a phenomenological model of the biophoton system and compared the corresponding result of the uncertainty product with that obtained from a previous report.

Quantum optical electromagnetic field and Rabi oscillation in time-varying medium

Eun Ji Jang, Min Jung, Ji Hoon Cha +2 more

In this paper, we consider the quantum optical electromagnetic wave in time-varying media, where the electric permittivity ϵ(t) and the magnetic permeability μ(t) depend on time explicitly as ϵ(t) = ϵ 0(1+qt) and μ(t) = μ 0(1+qt). For these time-varying parameters, we solve Maxwell’s equations. To construct time-dependent coherent states for this light, we adopt the invariant method proposed by Lewis and Riesenfeld and express the fields in terms of the time-dependent step operators for the invariant. We also discuss the deformed Rabi oscillation for both on-resonance and off-resonance.

COMMUTATION RELATIONS AND SELF-CONSISTENCY IN ELECTRODYNAMICS FOR THE FIELDS IN TIME-VARYING MEDIA

Jeong Ryeol Choi, Jun‐Young Oh

In linear media with time-dependent parameters, various commutation relations for the field operators obtained from the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant operator method are calculated. We investigated whether our development is self-consistent or not by evaluating the Heisenberg equation of motion for field operators using the associated commutation relation.

Invariants and Lie algebraic solutions of Schrödinger equation

Franco Salmistraro, Riccardo Rosso

A representation of invariants in quantum mechanics for a general time-dependent Hamiltonian is provided. The main properties of these operators and their relevance for solving the Schrödinger equation are discussed in light of this representation. In particular, the well-known Lewis and Riesenfeld’s method is shown to be recovered quite directly by the present approach. A detailed analysis is concerned with Hamiltonians which at each instant are elements of a finite dimensional Lie algebra. Exploiting the Wei and Norman’s theory for such Hamiltonians, it is found that the evolution of a quantum system is always determined, in part or fully, by an invariant which belongs to the same algebra.

Solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential

Jian Qi Shen

By making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory, the solution of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential corresponding to the quadratic-form Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant $I_{\rm q}(t)$ is obtained in the present paper. It is emphasized that in order to obtain the general solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, one should first find the complete set of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants. For the present quantum system with a time-dependent linear potential, the linear $I_{\rm l}(t)$ and quadratic $I_{\rm q}(t)$ (where the latter $I_{\rm q}(t)$ cannot be written as the squared of the former $I_{\rm l}(t)$, {\it i.e.}, the relation $I_{\rm q}(t)= cI_{\rm l}^{2}(t)$ does not hold true always) will form a complete set of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants. It is also shown that the solution obtained by Bekkar {\it et al.} more recently is the one corresponding to the linear $I_{\rm l}(t)$, one of the invariants that form the complete set. In addition, we discuss some related topics regarding the comment [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 016101 (2003)] of Bekkar {\it et al.} on Guedes's work [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 034102 (2001)] and Guedes's corresponding reply [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 016102 (2003)].
