Nonclassicality of light from a degenerate parametric oscillator

Abstract

The nonclassical nature of light from a degenerate parametric oscillator is discussed in terms of criteria based on direct photon counting probabilities of light. These criteria do not rely on phase sensitive detection and reveal the nonclassical nature of the field where the conventional criteria based on moments of light intensity (like sub-Poissonian statistics or anti-bunching) fail. We also consider the effect of detector efficiency on the signature of nonclassicality and find that under certain circumstances inefficient detection can enhance nonclassical behavior.

Photon-counting statistics of the degenerate optical parametric oscillator

Reeta Vyas, Surendra Singh

Nonclassical light beams generated by the degenerate optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold are analyzed in terms of photoelectron-counting sequences. The positive-P representation is used to calculate the generating function for photoelectron statistics in a closed form. This generating function is used to derive expressions for the photoelectron-counting and waiting-time distributions. The dependence of these distributions on mean photon number inside the cavity and efficiency of detection is studied. The relationship between photoelectron-counting sequence and the photon emission sequence is used to present a simple physical picture of light beams produced by the degenerate parametric oscillator.

Moments of nonclassicality quasiprobabilities

Saleh Rahimi-Keshari, T. Kiesel, W. Vogel

A method is introduced for the verification of nonclassicality in terms of moments of nonclassicality quasiprobability distributions. The latter are easily obtained from experimental data and will be denoted as nonclassicality moments. Their relation to normally ordered moments is derived, which enables us to verify nonclassicality by using well established criteria. Alternatively, nonclassicality criteria are directly formulated in terms of nonclassicality moments. The latter converge in proper limits to the usually used criteria, as is illustrated for squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Our theory also yields expectation values of any observable in terms of nonclassicality moments.

Higher-order nonclassical effects in a parametric oscillator

Reeta Vyas, Surendra Singh

Factorial moments for the light from a degenerate parametric oscillator mixed with a coherent local oscillator are calculated and shown to reveal novel nonclassical features of light. We have found novel regimes where the nonclassical character of the field is reflected not in the violations of inequalities based on the second-order moments but in those based on higher order moments. These violations can be observed in photoelectric measurements of light.

Direct observation of sub-binomial light

Tim J. Bartley, Gaia Donati, Xian‐Min Jin +3 more

Nonclassical states of light are necessary resources for quantum technologies such as cryptography, computation and the definition of metrological standards. Distinguishing nonclassical states from those that can be described without invoking quantum mechanics is both a necessary practical task and of fundamental interest. In general, signatures of nonclassicality arise from apparently pathological behaviour of the quasi-probability distributions used to describe the states. While tomographic reconstruction of the state is therefore sufficient to show nonclassicality, it is often more convenient to probe photon-counting statistics of on-off detectors directly. This is formalised by the Mandel Q-parameter QM= 〈Δn〉 / 〈n〉 - 1, which is negative for sub-Poissonian statistics arising from nonclassical states. However, the Mandel Q-parameter can fail when using a multiplexed array of on-off detectors to measure states with several photons; splitting in this manner can corrupt its original statistics. A new parameter, QB= N 〈(Δ c) 2 〉 / 〈 c 〉 (N - 〈 c 〉) can be used to witness nonclassicality directly from such click statistics. For QB<; 0, such statistics are thus deemed sub-binomial and therefore arise from a nonclassical state.

Nonclassicality criteria for N -dimensional optical fields detected by quadratic detectors

Jan Peřina, Pavel Pavlíček, Václav Michálek +2 more

Nonclassicality criteria for general $N$-dimensional optical fields are derived. They involve intensity moments, the probabilities of photon-number distributions, or combinations of both. The Hillery criteria for the sums of the probabilities of even or odd photon numbers are generalized to $N$-dimensional fields. As an example, the derived nonclassicality criteria are applied to an experimental three-mode optical field containing two types of photon-pair contributions. The accompanying nonclassicality depths are used to mutually compare their performance.

Novel nonclassical effects in the homodyne detection of squeezed light

Arlis Dodson, Reeta Vyas

Nonclassical effects exhibited by the homodyned field when light from an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is mixed with coherent light from a local oscillator are discussed. Calculations are carried out exactly without making the strong local oscillator approximation. It is found that, depending upon the local oscillator phase and the parameters characterizing the light from the OPO, the second order intensity correlation function of the superposed field violates various classical inequalities g(2)(0) ≥ 1, g(2)(0) ≥g(2)(τ), and |g(2)(0) –1| ≥ | g(2)(τ)–1|. Thus we can see sub-Poissonian or super-Poissonian statistics and bunching or antibunching. We express the fields at the beam splitter in terms of independent real Gaussian stochastic processes with coherent component. Using these properties of the dynamical field variables, we derive analytic expressions for quantities directly measurable in photon counting experiments. It is found that the waiting time distribution shows two extrema at nonzero times. The second order intensity correlation function is found to vanish at nonzero time in violation of a classical inequality.
