Abstract

The optical analog of the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via a continuum is experimentally demonstrated for photonic tunneling in femtosecond laser written waveguides. The results clearly show that the mechanism of light transfer relies on destructive interference and on the existence of a photonic dark state.

Transfer of light waves in optical waveguides via a continuum

Stefano Longhi

Classical wave optical analogs of coherent population transfer via a continuum, recently demonstrated for laser-driven atoms and molecules in the atomic physics context, are theoretically proposed for light waves propagating in waveguide-based photonic structures. In particular, it is shown that exploitation of the optical analogs of two-photon Rabi oscillations and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via continuous states enables efficient transfer of light waves between two channel optical waveguides side coupled to a slab waveguide.

Adiabatic passage of light in coupled optical waveguides

Stefano Longhi

Adiabatic passage of light in coupled optical waveguides with a curved axis is theoretically investigated and shown to bear a close connection with coherent population transfer among quantum states of atoms and molecules. In particular, the optical analog of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage can be realized in a three-waveguide optical directional coupler.

Adiabatic light transfer via dressed states in optical waveguide arrays

Giuseppe Della Valle, Marco Ornigotti, Toney Teddy Fernandez +4 more

We report on the experimental demonstration of adiabatic light transfer between the outer waveguides in a finite array of evanescently coupled optical waveguides with negligible excitation of all the intermediate waveguides. Such a counterintuitive light transfer scheme is an optical analogue of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via an auxiliary dressed state proposed in atomic physics for multilevel systems.

Photonic transport via chirped adiabatic passage in optical waveguides

Stefano Longhi

We propose a novel transport scheme for light waves in a triple-well optical system which mimics the technique of Raman chirped adiabatic passage (RCAP) for population transfer in three-level atomic or molecular systems driven by linearly chirped laser pulses. The optical analogue of atomic RCAP is realized using three tunnelling-coupled and cubically bent optical waveguides, and enables an almost complete light transfer between the outer waveguides with negligible excitation of the middle waveguide.

Effect of Nonlinearity on Adiabatic Evolution of Light

Yoav Lahini, Francesca Pozzi, Marc Sorel +3 more

We investigate the effect of nonlinearity in a system described by an adiabatically evolving Hamiltonian. Experiments are conducted in a three-core waveguide structure that is adiabatically varying with distance, in analogy to the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process in atomic physics. In the linear regime, the system exhibits an adiabatic power transfer between two waveguides which are not directly coupled, with negligible power recorded in the intermediate coupling waveguide. In the presence of nonlinearity the adiabatic light passage is found to critically depend on the excitation power. We show how this effect is related to the destruction of the dark state formed in this configuration.

Coherent tunneling by adiabatic passage in an optical waveguide system

Stefano Longhi, Giuseppe Della Valle, Marco Ornigotti +1 more

We report on an experimental demonstration of light transfer in an engineered triple-well optical waveguide structure which provides a classic analog of coherent tunneling by adiabatic passage (CTAP) recently proposed for coherent transport in space of neutral atoms or electrons among tunneling-coupled optical traps or quantum wells [A. D. Greentree et al., Phys. Rev. B 70, 235317 (2004); K. Eckert et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 023606 (2004)]. The direct visualization of CTAP wave-packet dynamics enabled by our simple optical system clearly shows that in the counterintuitive passage scheme light waves tunnel between the two outer wells without appreciable excitation of the middle well.
