Magneto-optical properties of an optically pumped medium

Abstract

The magneto-optical properties of a system subject to an optical and a radio-frequency radiation are calculated. The frequency of both radiations is close to the resonance frequencies of the system and as such they have a strong effect on its properties. The frequency shifts induced by optical radiation are obtained. Relations between the complex index of refraction and the frequency shifts are discussed.

Nonlinear Faraday effect in resonant media

B. Glushko, V. O. Chaltykyan

A theoretical analysis is made of the nonlinear (in respect of the radiation intensity) rotation of the plane of polarization occuring in an atomic medium subjected to a static magnetic field near one-photon (two-level atoms) and two-photon (three-level atoms) resonances. A study is also made of the influence of a strong monochromatic pump wave on the propagation of a weak nonmonochromatic wave. The wave functions and quasienergies are calculated for a three-level system in static magnetic and monochromatic electromagnetic fields near a two-photon resonance. It is shown that the Verdet constant and the refractive index of such a system depend on the magnitude and relative sign of the frequency detuning from resonance. Proximity to a two-photon resonance destroys the polarizability of a medium for either sign of the detuning.

Control of the index of refraction in optically dense medium

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov

In this work we investigate conditions of emergence and destruction of the electromagnetically induced transparency effect in the optically dense medium of atoms which are excited along closed contour of excitation by the three frequency radiation. We found the conditions under which index of refraction of the medium acquires spatial quasi-periodic dependence. It is possible to control this dependence by variation of the initial phases and intensities of the electromagnetic fields.

Interference enhancement of resonant magneto-optical effects

Yu. I. Heller

The influence of spectral interference of different nature on resonant Faraday rotation is studied using as examples the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in pure discrete atomic transitions and the transparency windows of autoionization resonances of gaseous media. A common numerical criterion for a substantial effect of spectral interference and coherence of atomic transitions on magneto-optical phenomena is established. A direct relationship between the polarization ellipse rotation angle of cw monochromatic light and reduction of the light pulse group velocity resulting from a strong frequency dispersion of the resonant refractive index is found. The known experimental data on ultraslow light pulses indicate the possibility of interference enhancement of the Faraday effect by a factor of 10 6 −10 7 .

Optical spectrum of strongly coupled dressed atomic states

William Graham Greenwood, Peter R. Fontana

A strong radio-frequency field couples two excited atomic states which also interact with the virtual radiation field. The radio-frequency field dresses the atomic states and the virtual radiation field causes them to decay spontaneously. The spectrum of the emitted radiation is calculated by Fourier transforming the differential equations for the amplitudes. The solutions are given in terms of recurrence relationships which can be evaluated to any desired accuracy. The optical radiation field acts as a probe on the dressed atomic states. The spectrum shows all the radio-frequency induced resonances. The frequencies of the states and the Bloch-Siegert shifts of the multi-photon resonances can be deduced from this spectrum.

Tunnel generation and locking stimulated Raman radiation components

V. N. Lugovoǐ

Stimulated Raman radiation is considered in a ring optical resonator. It is supposed that the resonator is partly filled with a condensed medium at the full length of the medium close to several tunnel lengths. A Raman-active medium and an optical waveguide are assumed to occupy a part of the condensed medium. The feasibility is shown of tunnel generation and synchronization of a great number of Stokes components of stimulated Raman radiation. Here, femtosecond light pulses are shown to be formed in a spacing adjacent to the Raman-active medium, the pulses being single over the periodT = 2\pi/\omega_{R}(ωRis the Raman frequency shift). Predicted and considered also are tunnel generation and locking of new light modes in an optical parametric oscillator. The effects are due to a correction for the dispersion of the full effective refractive index of the medium inside the resonator. Numerical calculations of the correction for a glass thin-film optical waveguide, quartz, and the Raman-active media CaCO3, C6H6, CS2inside the resonator are represented. Here, five or six Stokes components are shown to be generated and locked for CaCO3and C6H6, eight Stokes components for CS2. A similar numerical calculation is represented for the active medium LiNbO3in the corresponding optical parameteric oscillator. Here, new modes covering a frequency bandwidth of 5000 cm-1are shown to be feasible. Noted and discussed is also a higher-order correction for the effective refractive index dispersion making it feasible to broaden the frequency bandwidth for tunnel generation and locking.

Magneto-optical rotation of nonmonochromatic fields and its nonlinear dependence on optical density

G. S. Agarwal, Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

We calculate magneto-optical rotation of nonmonochromatic fields in an optically thick cold atomic medium. We show that the nonmonochromatic nature leads to a nonlinear dependence of the rotation angle on optical density. Using our calculations, we provide a quantitative analysis of the recent experimental results of Labeyrie et al. [Phys. Rev. A 64, 033402 (2001)] using cold ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms.
