Nonlinear Optical Effects in a System with Degenerate or Closely Spaced Levels in Solids

Abstract

Abstract The influence of two external high‐frequency electric fields (one of them being the field of strong laser beam) on a three‐level system with doubly degenerated excited states is considered. The change of the refractive index and of the ground‐frequency light‐absorption coefficient in the presence of laser radiation are predicted.

Nonlinear Susceptibilities in a Three-Level Atomic System

Nadeem A. Ansari, R.A. Sammut

We have studied the effect of the propagation of two strong fields of different frequencies on the nonlinear susceptibility in a medium composed of identical stationary three-level atoms in V-configuration. In particular, we show that each field influences the steady-state susceptibility, absorption and refractive-index change experienced by the other field. At large field strengths of one field, the second field experiences less absorption and an enhanced refractive index change.

Intense laser field-induced nonlinear optical properties of Morse quantum well

S. Şakiroğlu, Esin KASAPOĞLU, R.L. Restrepo +2 more

Abstractauthoren This paper investigates the effects of an intense laser field and electric field on the optical properties of quantum well represented by Morse potential. The non-resonant, high-frequency intense laser effects upon the system are treated within the framework of non-perturbative approach, modifying the confinement potential associated to the heterostructure. The analytical expressions of the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are obtained by using the compact-density matrix formalism. The results for a typical GaAs quantum well correspond to several configurations of the structural parameter, the strengths of the intense laser radiation, and the static electric field. Numerical results reveal the striking influence of the external fields on the magnitude and resonant peak energy positions of the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. Besides, the control of intersubband optical transitions by the structure parameter seems feasible.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in Morse quantum wells under electric field

S. Şakiroğlu

In this paper, we investigate theoretically the effects of electric field on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Morse quantum wells considering a two-level system. The effective mass approximation and the envelope function approach are used to calculate the energy levels and wave functions. The analytical expressions of the optical properties are obtained by using the compact density-matrix approach. The linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes are investigated as a function of the incident photon energy for several configurations of the structural parameter and the applied electric field. Numerical results, presented for a typical GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, reveal that the electric field has a significant effect on the optical characteristics of these structures and intersubband transitions can be modified by tuning the structural range parameter of the potential.

External electric field effect on the nonlinear optical properties of a laser dressed donor impurity in a GaAs spherical quantum dot confined at the center of a Ga 1-x Al x As cylindrical nano-wire

Ghasem Safarpour, Mohammad Izadi, M. Novzari +1 more

Linear and third order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes of an on-center donor impurity in a spherical GaAs quantum dot which is located at the center of a cylindrical Ga 1 -x Al x As nano-wire, have been investigated under the simultaneous effect of electric field and laser radiation. The linear and third order nonlinear optical properties are calculated based on optical 1-2, 2-3 and 1-3 transitions by means of the compact density-matrix approach. The energy eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions are calculated using finite difference approximation and reliability of calculated wave functions is checked by computing orthogonality. It is shown that optical spectrum shifts towards lower and higher energies for 1-2 transition and shifts towards lower energies for 2-3 and 1-3 transitions as the electric field strength increases. The presence of laser field shifts absorption spectrum towards lower energies. In the absence of electric and laser field, the magnitude of absorption coefficient and refractive index changes increase in transitions between higher levels. Simultaneous presence of both electric field and laser radiation has great effect on magnitude of absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. The saturation in optical spectrum can be adjusted by electric field and laser radiation.

Stark effect in high-frequency fields for resonant modulation

S. H. Kim, Hae Yang Chung

We solved in closed form the resonant-modulation problem for the effect of the high-frequency electric field on the absorption spectra of the three-level system. It is shown that an electric field whose frequency is made resonant with the separation between two upper levels should give rise to the two absorption lines of equal intensity disposed symmetrically in pairs about the allowed line. The separation between these two lines is linearly proportional to the intensity of the electric field. The positions and the property of equal intensity of these lines are the same in both the laser absorption spectrum and the ordinary absorption spectrum.
