Schwinger-boson mean-field theory for S=1 open spin chains

Abstract

The properties of S=1 open spin chains is studied using Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. It is found that localized S=1/2 states exist at the ends of chains and that the ground states of chains with even and odd number of sites are fundamentally different. Properties of the localized end states are discussed.

Edge states in Schwinger-boson mean-field theory of low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Tai Kai Ng

The origin and properties of the S=1/2 end states in S=1 open spin chains is explained within the framework of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. Moreover, we show that in two dimensions (square lattice), corresponding edge states exist with structures depending on spin magnitude S.

Schwinger-boson mean-field theory of the Heisenberg ferrimagnetic spin chain

Congjun Wu, Bin Chen, Xi Dai +2 more

The Schwinger-boson mean-field theory is applied to the quantum ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain. There is a ferrimagnetic long-range order in the ground state. We observe two branches of the low-lying excitation and calculate the spin reduction, the gap of the antiferromagnetic branch, and the spin fluctuation at $T=0 \mathrm{K}.$ These results agree with the established numerical results quite well. At finite temperatures, the long-range order is destroyed because of the disappearance of the Bose condensation. The thermodynamic observables, such as the free energy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and the spin correlation at $T>0 \mathrm{K},$ are calculated. The $T{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{uni}}$ has a minimum at intermediate temperatures and the spin-correlation length behaves as ${T}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at low temperatures. These qualitatively agree with the numerical results and the difference is small at low temperatures.

Bosonic mean-field theory of the spiral phases of Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a chain

Sumathi Rao, Diptiman Sen

We develop a bosonic mean-field theory to describe the spiral phases of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a one-dimensional chain, in terms of three bosons at each site. The ground state is disordered, and for large values of the spin S, two different and exponentially small energy gaps are found. The spin-spin correlation function is computed and is shown to decay exponentially at large distances. Our mean-field theory is also shown to be exact in a large-N generalization.

Combined study of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory and linearized tensor renormalization group on Heisenberg ferromagnetic mixed spin (S, σ) chains

Xin Yan, Zhen‐Gang Zhu, Gang Su

The Schwinger-boson mean-field theory (SBMFT) and the linearized tensor renormalization group (LTRG) methods are complementarily applied to explore the thermodynamics of the quantum ferromagnetic mixed spin (S, σ) chains. It is found that the system has double excitations, i.e. a gapless and a gapped excitation; the low-lying spectrum can be approximated by ωk∼Sσ2(S+σ)Jk2 with J the ferromagnetic coupling; and the gap between the two branches is estimated to be △ ∼ J. The Bose-Einstein condensation indicates a ferromagnetic ground state with magnetization mtotz=N(S+σ). At low temperature, the spin correlation length is inversely proportional to temperature (T), the susceptibility behaviors as χ=a1∗1T2+a2∗1T, and the specific heat has the form of C=c1∗T−c2∗T+c3∗T32, with ai (i = 1, 2) and ci (i = 1, 2, 3) the temperature independent constants. The SBMFT results are shown to be in qualitatively agreement with those by the LTRG numerical calculations for S = 1 and σ = 1/2. A comparison of the LTRG results with the experimental data of the model material MnIINiII(NO2)4(en)2(en = ethylenediamine), is made, in which the coupling parameters of the compound are obtained. This study provides useful information for deeply understanding the physical properties of quantum ferromagnetic mixed spin chain materials.

Effect of Single-Ion Anisotropy on S = 1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain in Schwinger Boson Mean-Field Theory

Qing Jiang, Hai‐Xia Cao, Zhen‐Ya Li

We use the Schwinger boson mean-field theory, in which the constraint is imposed on the average, to the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy (D > 0). Under the mean-field approximation to decouple the biquadratic term by introducing two HS fields and take the short range correlation and the coupling of on-site bosons into account, we find a clear and direct description for this system, and get two excitation spectra at T = 0 K, which distinguish the sz = 0 singlet and sz = ± 1 doublet. We also see that the relative phase of the two HS fields, having the lowest energy, is the one equal to zero.

Strong zero modes in integrable spin-S chains

Fabian H. L. Essler, Paul Fendley, Eric Vernier

We derive exact strong zero mode (ESZM) operators for integrable spin-S chains with open boundary conditions and a boundary field. Their locality properties are generally weaker than in the previously known cases, but they still imply infinite coherence times in the vicinity of the edges. We explain how such integrable chains possess multiple ground states describing a first-order quantum phase transition, and that the odd number of such states for integer S makes the weaker locality properties necessary. We make contact with more traditional approaches by showing how the ESZM for S=1/2 acts on energy eigenstates given by solutions of the Bethe equations.
