Effect of Single-Ion Anisotropy on S = 1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain in Schwinger Boson Mean-Field Theory

Abstract

We use the Schwinger boson mean-field theory, in which the constraint is imposed on the average, to the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy (D > 0). Under the mean-field approximation to decouple the biquadratic term by introducing two HS fields and take the short range correlation and the coupling of on-site bosons into account, we find a clear and direct description for this system, and get two excitation spectra at T = 0 K, which distinguish the sz = 0 singlet and sz = ± 1 doublet. We also see that the relative phase of the two HS fields, having the lowest energy, is the one equal to zero.

Quantum Phase Transition in Quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Single-Ion Anisotropy

An-Chun Ji, Tian Guang-Shan

In the present paper, we investigate the quantum phase transition in a spatially anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model of S = 1 with single-ion energy anisotropy. By using the Schwinger boson representation, we calculate the Gaussian correction to the critical value J ⊥ c caused by quantum spin fluctuations. We find that, for the positive single-ion energy, a nonzero value of J ⊥ c is always needed to stabilize the antiferromagnetic long-range order in this model. It resolves a difference among literature and shows clearly that the effect of quantum fluctuations may qualitatively change a result obtained by the mean-field theories on lower-dimensional systems.

The effect of single-ion anisotropy on the specific heat of a spin-one Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in an applied magnetic field

Huaizhong Xing, Jiqing Wang, Xiaofeng Xu +1 more

The specific heat of a spin-one Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with transverse and longitudinal single-ion anisotropies in the presence of an applied magnetic field is explored on the basis of the Schwinger boson mean-field theory. The specific heat as functions of temperature, the anisotropy as well as the applied field are discussed, respectively. The results indicate that new features of the specific heat as a function of temperature at the transverse single-ion anisotropy are very different from those obtained at longitudinal single-ion anisotropy in an applied transverse field.

Bilinear-biquadratic anisotropic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice

Antonio S. T. Pires

Abstract Motivated by the fact that the study of disordered phases at zero temperature is of great interest, I study the spin-one quantum antiferromagnet with a next-nearest neighbor interaction on a triangular lattice with bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions and a single ion anisotropy, using a SU(3) Schwinger boson mean-field theory. I calculate the critical properties, at zero temperature, for values of the single ion anisotropy parameter D above a critical value D C , where a quantum phase transition takes place from a higher D disordered phase to a lower D ordered phase.

Field-induced transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy in a transverse magnetic field

Huaizhong Xing, Gang Su, Song Wei Gao +1 more

The field-induced transition in one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is obtained on the basis of the Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. The behaviors of the specific heat and susceptibility as functions of temperature as well as the applied transverse field are explored, which are found to be different from the results obtained under a longitudinal field. The anomalies of the specific heat at low temperatures, which might be indicative of a field-induced transition from a Luttinger liquid phase to an ordered phase, are explicitly uncovered under the transverse field. A schematic phase diagram is proposed. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations.

Phase Diagram and Excitation Spectrum of S = 1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

H.-J. Mikeska

We investigate ground-state and low-lying excited states of the S = 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with exchange anisotropy, single-ion anisotropy and biquadratic exchange and with free boundary conditions. We present an approximate mapping of the S = 1 model to an effective S = 1/2 chain in an external magnetic field, which can be solved exactly in several limiting cases. We obtain results for the phase diagram, correlation functions and the excitation spectrum. The transition to the Haldane phase is related to the condensation of the lowest soliton modes and the hidden order parameter of the Haldane phase is identified as transverse long-range order in the effective S = 1/2 chain.
