Instability of a nonlinear Fabry–Perot interferometer

Abstract

A theoretical analysis is made of the operation of a Fabry–Perot interferometer containing a nonlinear (cubic) medium. An instability of the operation of this interferometer in the presence of perturbations traveling at an angle to exciting plane waves appears at lower amplitudes than those necessary for the appearance of a hysteresis.

Switching waves in a multistable Fabry-Perot interferometer with a thermooptic nonlinearity

A V Grigor'yants, L. L. Golik, Yu. A. Rzhanov +2 more

Numerical and experimental investigations were made of those characteristics of switching waves which were due to multistability of an extended Fabry–Perot interferometer with a thermooptic nonlinearity. A study was made of the propagation and interaction of waves of different amplitudes.

Nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer as an optical medium for waves traveling parallel to reflecting planes

Yu. I. Balkareǐ, V. B. Sandomirskiǐ

An analysis is made of the propagation of an optical wave parallel to reflecting planes in an extended nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer pumped by a strong wave of the same intensity. It is shown that the nonlinear-optics self-interaction of the first wave changes drastically near certain parts of the main experimental characteristic of the interferometer, which is the dependence of the intensity of the transmitted light on the intensity of the pump wave. The acoustooptic interaction can change similarly in this interferometer.

Bistability observed in a Fabry–Perot interferometer with quadratic nonlinear medium

B. Wedding, D. Jäger

Bistability due to a second-order dispersive nonlinearity in a Fabry–Perot resonator is studied. The experiments are performed on a nonlinear transmission line resonator. Nonlinear resonance curves, bistability as well as instabilities, and the generation of harmonics are observed. The theoretical treatment of bistability is based upon a nonlinear dispersion relation as derived from an inspection of two interacting harmonics or, in a second approach, of propagating solitons.

Dichroic optical bistability in a nonlinear Fabry–Perot interferometer

M. I. Dykman, Georgiy G. Tarasov

It is shown that a new type of optical bistability may occur in a Fabry–Perot resonator containing a nongyrotropic cubic crystal. This instability is due to an anisotropy of the nonlinear resonance absorption in the crystal. The explicit conditions for the establishment of dichroic optical bistability are determined for cases of two-photon absorption and resonance absorption by reorientable impurity centers.

Theory of a lossless nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

John H. Marburger, F. S. Felber

A Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a medium whose refractive index depends upon intensity has a multiple-valued transmission-vs-intensity characteristic. When the incident light is circularly polarized, and the nonlinearity is only cubic in the fields, Maxwell's equations may be solved exactly for the plane-parallel resonator field in terms of elliptic functions. An accurate approximate analysis is given for more general cases, including resonators with spherical mirrors and finite beams, where self-focusing is important. The theory is developed to yield design information for operation as an optical switch, "transistor," and power limiter.

Bistable transmission by a Fabry—Perot interferometer filled by a medium characterised by active and reactive nonlinearities

Sergey M. Zakharov

A phenomenological approach and the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility are used in an analysis of the transmission of coherent light through a Fabry—Perot interferometer filled by a medium with active and reactive nonlinearities. The mean-field approximation is used to demonstrate analytically the feasibility of optical bistability. The conditions for appearance of this bistability are discussed.
