Classical path from quantum motion for a particle in a transparent box

Abstract

We consider the problem of a free particle inside a one-dimensional box with transparent walls (or equivalently, along a circle with a constant speed) and discuss the classical and quantum descriptions of the problem. After calculating the mean value of the position operator in a time-dependent normalized complex general state and the Fourier series of the function position, we explicitly prove that these two quantities are in accordance by (essentially) imposing the approximation of high principal quantum numbers on the mean value. The presentation is accessible to advanced undergraduate students with a knowledge of the basic ideas of quantum mechanics.

Classical-quantum versus exact quantum results for a particle in a box

Salvatore De Vincenzo

The problems of a free classical particle inside a one-dimensional box: (i) with impenetrable walls and (ii) with penetrable walls, were considered. For each problem, the classical amplitude and mechanical frequency of the T -th harmonic of the motion of the particle were identified from the Fourier series of the position function. After using the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Wilson quantization rule, the respective quantized amplitudes and frequencies (i.e., as a function of the quantum label n ) were obtained. Finally, the classical-quantum results were compared to those obtained from modern quantum mechanics, and a clear correspondence was observed in the limit of n » τ.

When the classical & quantum mechanical considerations hint to a single point; a microscopic particle in a one dimensional box with two infinite walls and a linear potential inside it

Majid Monajjemi, K. Zare, A.R. Zieglari

In this paper we have solved analytically the Schrodinger equation for a microscopic particle in a one-dimensional box with two infinite walls, which the potential function inside it, has a linear form. Based on the solutions of this special quantum mechanical system, we have shown that as the quantum number approaches infinity the expectation values of microscopic particle position and square of the linear momentum are equal to the classical time average of particle position and its square of the linear momentum, respectively.

The classical limit of quantum mechanics and the Fejér sum of the Fourier series expansion of a classical quantity

Quanhui Liu

In quantum mechanics, the expectation value of a quantity on a quantum state, provided that the state itself gives in the classical limit a motion of a particle in a definite path, in the classical limit goes over to a Fourier series form of the classical quantity. In contrast to this widely accepted point of view, a rigorous calculation shows that the expectation value on such a state in the classical limit exactly gives the Fejér arithmetic mean of the partial sums of the Fourier series.

On Global Approximate Controllability of a Quantum Particle in a Box by Moving Walls

Aitor Balmaseda, Davide Lonigro, Juan Manuel Pérez-Pardo

Abstract. We study a system composed of a free quantum particle trapped in a box whose walls can change their position. We prove the global approximate controllability of the system: any initial pure state can be driven arbitrarily close to any target pure state in the Hilbert space of the free particle with a predetermined final position of the box. To this purpose we consider weak solutions of the Schrödinger equation and use a stability theorem for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Ehrenfest-Type Theorems for a One-Dimensional Dirac Particle

Vidal Alonso Secades, Salvatore De Vincenzo

The time evolution of the mean values of the standard position, velocity and momentum operators, for a relativistic Dirac particle in a one-dimensional box, as well as for a free Dirac particle on a line with a hole, are studied. By considering the cases of “free” particle, confined particle and particle with a delta function interaction, it is shown that the Ehrenfest-type theorems for these operators are not always valid.

Quantum-mechanical results for a free particle inside a box with general boundary conditions

M. G. E. da Luz, Bin Kang Cheng

The wave functions with the most general boundary conditions consistent with the conservation of probability for a free particle inside a box [Phys. Rev. D 42, 1194 (1990)] are calculated. The exact Green's functions and propagators for some special cases are obtained and a semiclassical approach for the propagators is considered. Finally, the influence of the boundary conditions over the path integral's formalism is briefly discussed.
