On Global Approximate Controllability of a Quantum Particle in a Box by Moving Walls

Abstract

Abstract. We study a system composed of a free quantum particle trapped in a box whose walls can change their position. We prove the global approximate controllability of the system: any initial pure state can be driven arbitrarily close to any target pure state in the Hilbert space of the free particle with a predetermined final position of the box. To this purpose we consider weak solutions of the Schrödinger equation and use a stability theorem for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Global Approximate Controllability of Quantum Systems by Form Perturbations and Applications

Aitor Balmaseda, Davide Lonigro, Juan Manuel Pérez-Pardo

Abstract. We provide sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum control systems corresponding to form perturbations of the drift Hamiltonian modulated by a control function. We rely on previous results on controllability of quantum bilinear control systems and obtain a priori [Formula: see text]-bounds of the controls for generic initial and target states. We apply a stability result for the nonautonomous Schrödinger equation to extend the results to systems defined by form perturbations, including singular perturbations. As an application of our results, we prove approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box with a point-interaction with tuneable strength at the center of the box.

Stability and control of a confined 1D quantum system with time-dependent delta potentials

Andrea Mantile

The evolution problem for a quantum particle confined in a 1D box and interacting with one fixed point through a time dependent point interaction is considered. Under suitable assumptions of regularity for the time profile of the Hamiltonian, we prove the existence of strict solutions to the corresponding Schrödinger equation. The result is used to discuss the stability and the steady-state local controllability of the wavefunction when the strenght of the interaction is used as a control parameter.

Semi-Global Approximate stabilization of an infinite dimensional quantum stochastic system

Ram Somaraju, Mazyar Mirrahimi, Pierre Rouchon

In this paper we study the semi-global (approximate) state feedback stabilization of an infinite dimensional quantum stochastic system towards a target state. A discrete-time Markov chain on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space is used to model the dynamics of a quantum optical cavity. We can choose an (unbounded) strict Lyapunov function that is minimized at each time-step in order to prove (weak-$\ast$) convergence of probability measures to a final state that is concentrated on the target state with (a pre-specified) probability that may be made arbitrarily close to 1. The feedback parameters and the Lyapunov function are chosen so that the stochastic flow that describes the Markov process may be shown to be tight (concentrated on a compact set with probability arbitrarily close to 1). We then use Prohorov's theorem and properties of the Lyapunov function to prove the desired convergence result.

A quantum particle in a box with moving walls

We analyze the non-relativistic problem of a quantum particle that bounces back and forth between two moving walls. We recast this problem into the equivalent one of a quantum particle in a fixed box whose dynamics is governed by an appropriate time-dependent Schrödinger operator.

Quantum-mechanical treatment of two particles in a potential box

G. Mann

Abstract In classical physics, there is a basic principle, namely “A particle cannot be located at the position of another one on the same time.” Which consequences can be derived if this principle is transferred into quantum physics? For doing that, two distinguishable particles are considered to be trapped in a potential box by means of the Schrödinger equation. In result, the particles can necessarily be located only at discrete positions.

Effective Schrodinger equation for one-dimensional systems with rapidly oscillating boundary conditions

N. P. Tretyakov, Павел Евгеньевич Голосов, Anton Kochanov

The method of the effective Schrodinger equation applied to the one-dimensional problem of a moving particle in a potential box with a potential function and high-frequency time-dependent boundary conditions is investigated. The method of converting the initial equation written for a system with time-dependent boundary conditions to an equation describing a system in a constant region is briefly presented. The resulting system can be considered as a particle in a potential box, located in the field of some effective potential, different from the initial one. Next we consider a particular case of wall motion, with the subsequent construction of the effective Schrodinger equation. Rapid oscillations of the potential box as a whole (i.e., without changing its width) lead to an additional term in the effective equation proportional to the second derivative of the potential. This, in particular, can lead to the formation of potential wells at potential peaks in which bound states of a particle are possible. In the considered case, it was assumed that the oscillation amplitudes are small in comparison with the characteristic dimensions of the system.
