Four-wave wavefront reversal in a coded reference wave field

Abstract

A quantitative theory is developed for wavefront reversal in four-wave interaction in a field of coded reference waves, i.e., of waves having substantial fine-structure spatial inhomogeneity. It is found that by using conjugate coded waves, it is possible to reverse a weak signal with transfer of up to 50% of the reference wave energy to the reversed component and to eliminate the self-focusing instability of conventional four-wave wavefront reversal. Possible methods of producing conjugate coded waves are indicated.

Wavefront reversal of optical radiation using feedback in four-wave interaction

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, E M Zemskov

A theoretical analysis is made of wavefront reversal which is not sensitive to the optical quality of the nonlinear wavefront-reversing medium when complex-conjugate reference waves are formed spontaneously. An investigation is made of the linear and nonlinear stages of reversed wave generation in various nonlinear media using feedback in degenerate and nondegenerate four-wave interaction. It is shown that in nonamplifying nonlinear media this method can only be achieved by additional amplification of the radiation reflected from the nonlinear medium.

Self-reversal of the wavefront of high-power radiation in a light-induced four-wave interaction in a resonant medium

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatolii A Afanas'ev, S. Ya. Kilin

A wavefront reversal system is proposed for high-power optical radiation. This system is based on a resonant four-wave interaction without recourse to external pump waves. Stimulated scattering of the wave being reversed in a resonant medium placed inside a resonator creates two opposite pump waves and a parametric interaction between them generates reversed radiation. The efficiency of such self-reversal is comparable with the efficiency of conventional wavefront reversal as a result of a four-wave interaction in nonresonant media with a phase nonlinearity and it may reach 10 −3 .

Quality of wavefront reversal of multifrequency radiation by four-wave interaction

A. I. Erokhin, Valeri I. Kovalev, П. А. Михеев +1 more

It is shown experimentally that broadening of the frequency spectrum of waves participating in four-wave interaction in a system with exactly counterpropagating reference waves results in an angular spread of the reflected radiation and thus causes a deterioration in the wavefront reversal quality. The angular spread is proportional to the angle of convergence of the signal and the parallel pump wave and to the width of the emission spectrum.

Influence of linear absorption and reflection on the characteristics of four-wave wavefront reversal

Boris Ya Zel'dovich, Tatiana Victorovna Yakovleva

An analysis is made of the theory of four-wave wavefront reversal allowing for linear absorption and reflection of all the interacting waves from a mirror which forms a second reference wave from the first incident wave. The Born approximation is used to find the optimum thickness of the nonlinear medium giving the maximum reversal coefficient. Conditions for parametric four-wave oscillation with an arbitrary frequency shift are determined and the dependence of the threshold intensity of the incident reference wave on the linear reflection coefficient of the wave-forming mirror is found for a given thickness of the medium in the absence of absorption.

Control of the spatial structure of radiation formed by reflection from a four-wave mirror

Alexander A. Betin, Alexander A. Shilov

An experimental investigation was made of the feasibility of controlling the spatial structure of a wave formed by four-wave reversal of the wavefront with the aid of modulation of the field amplitude or phase in a transverse cross section of one of the pump beams. It was found that the effect can be used to transmit data or images across inhomogeneous media.

Polarization-preserving wavefront reversal by four-wave mixing in photoanisotropic materials

L. Nikolova, Тодор Тодоров, N. Tomova +1 more

A method of polarization (vector) wavefront reversal by four-wave mixing in a photoanisotropic material is described. Jones matrices, describing the dynamic holographic gratings recorded in the material at arbitrary polarization of the signal wave, are derived. They are employed to define the conditions for generating a wave that is fully conjugate (by polarization as well) to the signal wave. The way to achieving these conditions by optically controlling the anisotropy of the nonlinear medium is demonstrated experimentally.
