Abstract

We propose a configuration method of a time-division interferometer for stability enhancement of a phase-encoded one-way quantum key distribution system. An optical phase modulator was placed outside of an optical interferometer to shorten the optical path length of the optical fiber-based interferometer.

Time-division single-photon Sagnac interferometer for quantum key distribution

Chunyuan Zhou, Heping Zeng

We introduce a single-photon Sagnac interferometer for quantum cryptography using time-division phase modulation. The interferometer was arranged to allow coherent laser pulses to travel clockwise and counter-clockwise along the same fiber loop with the corresponding phases modulated in separated periods, interfering at the exit coupler. High visibility of the single-photon interference was observed over a long-distance Sagnac loop. Stable performance was realized by passive compensation of stress and temperature-dependent drifts of the fiber-optic path. Time-division phase encoding and decoding can be realized by controlling the applied electric pulses on integrated phase modulators in the Sagnac loop, which makes this system suitable for a practical quantum cryptography system.

We experimentally demonstrates a two way quantum key distribution (QKD) system with a single Mach Zehnder interferometer over 10 km standard grade optical fiber. The scheme utilizes optical phase encoding/decoding with polarization of photon maintained through the use of polarization maintaining optical fiber at the transmitting and receiving ends and achieves a visibility of 99%.

Unidirectional Quantum Key Distribution System Based upon a Time-Division Mach–Zehnder Interferometer Consisting of Phase Stabilized Optical Fibers

Jun-Bum Park, Sungwon Khym, Kyung-Woon Lee +2 more

We propose a unidirectional quantum key distribution (QKD) system based upon a time-division Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZ) using phase stabilized optical fibers (PSOFs) for the sake of achieving the phase stability during the key distribution. A simple comparison between MZs constituent with PSOF and normal single mode fiber (SMF) is made. During the key distribution over 25 km of standard optical fiber, the phase drift of 4.6 × 10 -4 π/s is obtained. We discuss the demonstration of the quantum key distribution when the asymmetric MZ (AMZ) of PSOF is applied on the proposed QKD system.

We report the quantum key distribution (QKD) demonstration over a standard optical singlemod fiber, implementing the BB84 phase-coding protocol via one-way optical scheme. The stabilization technique was developed allowing to maintain continuous QKD with a high bit rate. Stabilization is applied both against polarization and phase drifts, using the feedback system.

Time-division phase modulated single-photon interference in a Sagnac interferometer

WUGuang, ZHOUChunyuan, ZENGHeping

We introduce a stable, long-distance single- photon Sagnac interferometer, which has a balanced configuration to efficiently compensate phase drift caused by change of the fiber-optic path. By using time-division phase modulation, single-photon interference was realized at 1550 nm in a 5-km-long as well as 27-km-long Sagnac fiber loops, with a fringe visibility higher than 90% and long-term stability. The stable performance of the single-photon interference indicated that the time-division phase-modulated Sag- nac interferometer might readily lead to practical applications in single-photon routing and quantum cryptography.

Laboratory Demonstration of Phase-Time Encoding Quantum Key Distribution System with Multimode Delay Interferometer

V V Tretiakov, Andrey N. Klimov, Kirill A. Balygin +1 more

Abstract We report on the adaptation of a commercially available fiber-based quantum key distribution (QKD) system with phase-time encoding to free-space operation. The proposed approach minimizes architectural modifications by replacing the single-mode receiving interferometer with a free-space multi-mode delay interferometer, enabling efficient detection of spatially distorted quantum states typical for atmospheric channels. Several interferometer configurations are experimentally investigated, and a multi-mode Michelson interferometer with polarization routing is identified as the optimal solution in terms of interference visibility, loss, and alignment robustness. The impact of chromatic and modal dispersion on phase-time interference is analyzed and shown to be manageable under realistic system parameters. A laboratory QKD experiment demonstrates stable operation with a quantum bit error rate of about 4.5% and a secret key rate of hundreds of bits per second, confirming the feasibility of extending fiber-based QKD platforms to free-space links.
