GENERALIZED MOMENTUM OPERATORS IN QUANTUM MECHANICS. Series 3

>The usual form for the quantum-mechanical operator P conjugate to a generalized coordinate q is noted to be nonHermitian with respect to physically acceptable bound state wave functions in some cases. A corrected form is shown to be always Hermitian with respect to acceptable bound state wave functions. Eigenfunctions for the new form are not necessartly orthogonal as with the usual form. ON THE HERMITEAN OPERATORS IN QUANTUM MECHANICS

H. C. Lee

The main purpose of this paper is, after making some necessary preliminaries on the theory ot linear differential operators in one real variable, to obtain the explicit condition that such an operator of any order be a Hermitean operator, and as application of the result point out various quantum-mechanical instances.
