Abstract

The way in which the destructive interference between hyper-Raman scattering and four-wave mixing leads to the generation of photon statistics matched fields for Stokes and parametric waves and to the medium transparency for both pulses is demonstrated. On the basis of this effect a mechanism is proposed for amplification of the weak Stokes signal with a simultaneous reduction of the quantum fluctuations in its field.

Generation of phase-correlated light pulses in a hyper-Raman active medium

Yu. P. Malakyan, A. R. Mkhitaryan

We analysis within the quantum setting the effect of correlation of monochromatic fields of the Stokes and parametric radiation generated in a two-photon-absorbing medium by hyper-Raman scattering and four-wave mixing, respectively. Our results show that when there is destructive interference between the two processes, both modes are amplified in the medium in a correlated way, so that beyond a certain characteristic distance they propagate in a stationary manner with the same amplitudes and photon statistics but with opposite phases, while the medium becomes transparent to them. We calculate the intensity of the fields, the emission linewidths, and the diffusion of the total phase, the latter determining the extent of phase noise correlation at the output. We also show that no matter how the phases of the separate modes diffuse, the quantum fluctuations in the total phase may be completely squeezed.

Suppression of the four-wave mixing amplification via Raman absorption

G. Romanov, Chris O’Brien, Irina V. Novikova

We propose a method to controllably suppress the effect of the four-wave mixing caused by the coupling of the strong control optical field to both optical transitions in the Λ system under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). At sufficiently high atomic density, this process leads to amplification of a weak optical signal field, that is detrimental for the fidelity of any EIT-based quantum information applications. Here we show that an additional absorption resonance centred around the Stokes field frequency, generated in such a four-wave mixing process, may efficiently suppress the unwanted probe amplification without affecting properties of the EIT interaction. We discuss the possibility of creating such tunable absorption using two-photon Raman absorption resonances in the other Rb isotope, and present some preliminary experimental results.

Evolution of four-wave mixing by controlling Raman coherence in a multi-dressed atomic system

Li-Ya Pei, Jinyan Niu, Ruquan Wang +1 more

The evolution of enhanced four-wave mixing based on Raman coherence as the probe intensity increases is observed experimentally in an 85 R b atomic vapor system. We propose that for a Doppler-broadened Λ -type level system, the generated anti-Stokes field from one-photon resonance will be suppressed by the dressed-states resonance and can be controlled by the probe intensity, which influences the effective transverse relaxation rate of Raman coherence. When the probe field is not so weak, the double resonance for dressed states will greatly suppress the anti-Stokes emission at the central frequency, and the signal peak will be split. We show that this phenomenon is a result of the destructive polarization interference between atoms with different velocities from the two types of resonance. Based on our model, we present a new, to the best of our knowledge, interpretation of four-wave mixing enhancement in the conventional Λ -type electromagnetically induced transparency system.

Mutual suppression of the electron stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave parametric mixing

Yu. P. Malakyan

A new effect is considered: self-induced suppression of electron stimulated Raman scattering involving generation of two new fields from the Stokes radiation as a result of four-wave mixing, interfering destructively with electron stimulated Raman scattering and suppressing it, which in turn suppresses the mixing process. The effect occurs in the steady-state case and not under transient conditions. The results account in a simple manner for the generation of the Stokes radiation in barium vapor as a result of different transitions, depending on the duration of the pump pulse.

Theory of generation and amplification of Stokes and anti-Stokes waves in gaseous media

Nikolai E. Kornienko, A. M. Steba, V. L. Strizhevskiǐ

A theoretical analysis is made of generation and amplification of Stokes and anti-Stokes waves in gaseous media allowing for Raman and parametric processes and saturation effects. Allowance is also made for any difference between the Raman polarizabilities of the Stokes and anti-Stokes waves which may be caused in particular by the occurrence of one-photon quasiresonances of the interacting waves. Assuming that pump and Stokes (or anti-Stokes) waves are applied at the entrance to a medium (inverted or uninverted), a general solution is found for the amplitudes of the interacting waves under exact resonance and phase-matching conditions. This is used as the basis to investigate their spatial evolution (in particular, for inverse Raman light scattering) and expressions are found for the maximum efficiencies for conversion of the pump to Stokes and/or anti-Stokes waves. It is shown that depending on the relationship between the Raman polarizabilities and also on the input parameters of the waves, conditions of parametric bleaching of the medium with nonzero amplitudes of all the waves or conditions of complete conversion of the pump to the Stokes and anti-Stokes waves or to one of these are established asymptotically. An investigation is made of the stability of these solutions.
