Squeezing in multiphoton absorption with and without a resonator

Ulrike Herzog

Squeezing in both intracavity and travelling-wave multiphoton absorption is investigated theoretically for incident intense nearly coherent light. It is shown that after sufficiently strong travelling-wave k-photon absorption (k=2,3...) a squeezed state of the radiation field is reached that is not a minimum uncertainty state. In this state the inphase and quadrature variances of the normalized electric field strength approach the asymptotic values k/(4(2k-1)) and k/4, respectively. With the help of an approximate Heisenberg picture treatment of a continuous mode field travelling through a broad-band k-photon absorber an analytical expression is obtained for the evolution of the squeezing spectrum in dependence on the degree of absorption. For intracavity multiphoton absorption the spectrum of output squeezing is investigated with the help of the usual Langevin equation approach. It turns out that the squeezing bandwidth in intracavity and travelling-wave multiphoton absorption is determined by the cavity bandwidth and the absorber linewidth, respectively.

Narrow Resonances with Excitation of Finite Bandwidth Field

The effect of the laser linewidth on the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom is revisited. The novel spectral features, such as hole-burning and dispersive profiles at line centre of the fluorescence spectrum are predicted when the laser linewidth is much greater than its intensity. The unique features result from quantum interference between different dressed-state transition channels. c # 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. PACS : 42.50.Hz; 32.80.-t Keywords: Resonance fluorescence; Laser linewidth; Quantum interference The study of resonance fluorescence spectra has provided much fundamental insight into the subject of atom1light interactions. It is well known that for weak laser field excitation, the spectrum exhibits a Lorentzian lineshape, whereas it develops into the Mollow triplet for strong field excitation [1]. The latter is a direct signature of stimulated emissions and absorptions of the atom during the time interval for one spontaneous decay. Recently, considera...

Multiphoton ionization of barium with a tunable pulsed laser in the range 570-608 nm

Sanjay G. Nakhate, S. A. Ahmad, M. A. N. Razvi +1 more

Multiphoton ionization (MPI) of barium atom using an excimer-pumped pulsed dye laser has been studied in the wavelength range 570-608 nm at a laser intensity approximately 10.0 GW cm -2 . Resonances in MPI were recorded by monitoring either the ions produced in the multiphoton process using a thermionic detector or fluorescence from the ions formed in their various excited states of Ba + . The observation of photoion and fluorescence spectra were made on Ba vapour in the heat-pipe oven in the moderate-density regime ( approximately 10 13 atoms/cm 3 ) so that the collisional effects are negligible. Fine-structure resolution of the final ionic state (6p 2 P 1/2,3/2 ), produced after four-photon autoionizing decay was obtained. The decay of the Ba atom after four-photon absorption preferentially populates the 6p 2 P 3/2 state relative to the 6p 2 P 1/2 state.
