Abstract

The effect of quantum interference from incoherent pump field on the Kerr nonlinearity of V- and Lambda-type three-level systems is investigated. It is found that enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be obtained via quantum interference of incoherent pump field. It is also demonstrated that the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is located in the reduced-absorption region. The enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity is attributed mainly to the presence of extra atomic coherence induced by quantum interference from incoherent pump field.

Controllable Kerr Nonlinearity via Incoherent Pump Fields in Semiconductor Quantum Wells

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Mostafa Sahrai, H. Tajalli

Abstract: A theoretical investigation is carried out into the impact of incoherent pumping fields and quantum interference induced by incoherent pumping fields on the Kerr nonlinearity in a three-level asymmetric semiconductor quantum well system. It is found that Kerr nonlinearity is so sensitive to the rate of incoherent pumping fields, but insensitive to the quantum interference induced by incoherent pumping fields. In addition, it is demonstrated that an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity with reduced absorption can be achieved just via the strength of Fano- type interference and without applying any coherent laser field. The obtained results are very different from the conventional schemes which coherent coupling fields are used to control the Kerr nonlinearity. This advantages make our electronic medium much more practical than its atomic counterpart due to its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

Enhancing Kerr nonlinearity via spontaneously generated coherence

钮月萍, 龚尚庆

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence on the Kerr nonlinearity of general three-level systems of Lambda, ladder, and V-shape types. It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, that the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced. In the Lambda- and ladder-type systems, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity increases and at the same time enters the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensifies. As for the V-type system, the absorption property is significantly modified and therefore enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption occurs for certain probe detunings. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated coherence.

Giant Kerr nonlinearity induced by interacting quantum coherences from decays and incoherent pumping

Yanfeng Bai, Wen‐Xing Yang, Dingan Han +1 more

A scheme for generating the giant enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level system with the quantum coherences from the decays and the incoherent pumping is proposed. Compared with that generated in a general four-level system, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude with vanishing linear absorption. By using the numerical results, we show that the remarkable enhancement should be attributed to the interaction of the quantum coherences from the decays and the incoherent pumping.

Enhanced self-Kerr nonlinearity in spontaneous emission

Xiang-an Yan, Liqiang Wang, Bao-yin Yin +1 more

We propose a new scheme for achieving giant enhancement of the self-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level Y-type atom with two highest nearly degenerate lying levels. We have found that, owing to the quantum interference effect that originates from spontaneous emission from two closely lying levels, large Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved under appropriate conditions. In particular, in addition to the amplitudes, the phases of the applied fields also affect the Kerr nonlinearity. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of some extra atomic coherence terms induced by the spontaneously generated coherence. We present a physical understanding of our numerical results using analytical explanation.

Kerr nonlinearity and optical multi-stability in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Mostafa Sahrai, Hamid Reza Hamedi, Meisam Memarzadeh

The nonlinear response to applied fields of a four-level Y-type atomic system is investigated. The effect of laser intensity and quantum interference induced by spontaneous emission on optical bistability, optical multi-stability and Kerr nonlinearity is then discussed. It is found that the threshold of the optical bistability can substantially be reduced by the quantum interference. So, an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity with reduced absorption can be achieved.
