Abstract

We investigate the Kerr nonlinearity of a V -type three-level atomic system where the upper two states decay outside to another state and hence spontaneous generated coherence may exist. It is shown that dark state and hence perfect transparency present under certain conditions. Meanwhile, the Kerr nonlinearity can be controlled by manipulation of the decay rates and the splitting of the two excited states. Therefore, enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption can be obtained under proper parameters.

Phase control of Kerr nonlinearity in V-type system with spontaneously generated coherence

Hailong Gao, Hui Sun, Shuangli Fan +1 more

We study phase control of linear and nonlinear optical responses in a three-level atomic system in V-configuration exhibiting spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). Because of the SGC effect, the strength of Kerr nonlinearity strongly depends upon the relative phase between the probe and control fields as well as the absorptions. By controlling the relative phase appropriately, large Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved with canceled linear and nonlinear absorptions. Combining with the phase modulation, the strict decay condition of spontaneous decay rates is not needed.

CONTROL OF ABSORPTION AND KERR NONLINEARITY BASED ON QUANTUM COHERENCE WITHOUT DRIVING FIELD

Zhonghua Huang, Ai-Xi Chen, Zhao-Chu Chen +1 more

In a three-level atomic system, the influences of spontaneously generated coherence on the linear absorption and the Kerr nonlinearity are investigated. Our studies show that properties of linear absorption can be dramatically affected by the effect of spontaneously generated coherence. With increase of intensities of spontaneously generated coherence, absorption inhibition will occur, and finally the atomic medium becomes transparent. Furthermore, we find that the Kerr nonlinearity can be obviously enhanced under the action of effects of spontaneously generated coherence. Comparing with traditional scheme of the electromagnetically induced transparency, absorption and Kerr nonlinearity can be controlled without need another driving field in our scheme.

Enhancing Kerr nonlinearity via spontaneously generated coherence

Yueping Niu, Shangqing Gong

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence on the Kerr nonlinearity of general three-level systems of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, ladder, and V-shape types. It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, that the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced. In the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$- and ladder-type systems, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity increases and at the same time enters the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensifies. As for the V-type system, the absorption property is significantly modified and therefore enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption occurs for certain probe detunings. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated coherence.

Polychromatic Kerr nonlinearity within electromagnetically induced transparency window

Guanghui Wang, Chuan-Jia Shan, De-Ying Gao +3 more

We study the nonlinear effect in a three-level atomic system in Λ configuration. As two or more fields are confined within the common electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window, they directly disturb EIT dark state at the same time, which leads to the self- and cross-Kerr nonlinear interactions. Our scheme is different from the existed schemes based on three-level or multilevel systems only existing single type of nonlinear interactions. In the common EIT windows, the self- and cross-Kerr nonlinearities are established with suppressed linear absorption and our scheme can be generalized polychromatic Kerr nonlinearity. Because the atoms are almost trapped in the ground states and the atom population becomes unchanged, the scheme is robust to the atomic spontaneous emission. Our scheme is a promising avenue for preparation of squeezing and entanglement .

Coherent control of Kerr nonlinearity via double dark resonances

A. Rahelia, M. Sahraib, A. Namdarc +1 more

A theoretical scheme for enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is proposed in a four-level ladder-type atomic system based on double dark resonances (DDRs). We solve the relevant density matrix equations in steady state and utilize the perturbation theory to obtain the analytical expressions for the third order susceptibility of the atomic system. The influence of system parameters on behavior of the first and third order susceptibilities is then discussed. In particular, it is found that an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity with reduced linear and nonlinear absorption is obtained around zero probe detuning under the slow light condition through proper adjusting the laser field intensity and frequency detuning of driving fields. The dressed state analysis is employed to explain the physical origin of the obtained result. The obtained results may be important for all-optical signal processing and quantum information technology.
