Rubidium 52P fine-structure transitions induced by collisions with potassium and caesium atoms

Cedomil Vadla, S. Knezović, Mladen Movre

A diode-laser fluorescence experiment was performed in order to study fine-structure transitions between 5 2 P states of rubidium atoms colliding with ground-state potassium or caesium atoms. The Rb (5 2 P 3 2/) state was optically excited and the intensity ratio of sensitized to direct fluorescence was measured. The obtained cross sections for the excitation energy transfer Rb( 2 P 3 2/) to Rb( 2 P 1 2/) induced by collisions with K and Cs (T=573 K) are sigma =54 AA 2 +or-30% and sigma =15 AA 2 +or-30%, respectively. Assuming detailed balancing, the cross sections for the reverse process Rb( 2 P 1 2/) to Rb( 2 P 3 2/) are sigma =60 AA 2 +or-30%, and sigma =16.5 AA 2 +or-30% for K and Cs, respectively.

Kinematically Complete Charge Exchange Experiment in the Cs++Rb Collision System Using a MOT Target

X. Fléchard, H. Nguyen, E. Wells +2 more

Charge exchange is examined with unprecedented precision using the newly developed magneto-optical trap-target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (MOTRIMS) technique. Initial and final state selective, charge exchange cross sections are obtained for 6 keV Cs+ colliding with rubidium in 5s and 5p states. For each charge transfer channel, cross sections differential in scattering angle are measured. These data are used to overturn previous long-standing conjecture as to the origin of oscillations seen in total charge exchange cross section measurements, and compare well with an enhanced Demkov model calculation.

Cross-sections for energy transfer to high Rydberg states of caesium in collisions of excited Cd and unexcited Cs atoms

A. Czajkowski, M. Czajkowski

Collisional transfer of excitation energy from cadmium to caesium was investigated using methods of sensitized fluorescence. A mixture of cadmium and caesium vapors at low pressure was irradiated with Cd 3263.0 Å resonance radiation producing a population of Cd (53P1) atoms whose inelastic collisions with ground-state Cs atoms resulted in a transfer of excitation energy to a close-lying S, P, D and F states in caesium. The subsequent decay of these states manifested itself in the emission of sensitized fluorescence spectrum. Intensity measurements on the components of the spectrum by means of energy calibrated detector yielded some 50 cross-section values whose magnitudes range from 0.2 Å2 to 30.0 Å2 and which exhibit a pronounced resonances with ΔE the energy defect between Cd (53P1) and the appropriate level in caesium.
