Characteristics of nonresonant excitation of superradiance and photon echo signals

Abstract

A theoretical analysis is made of the superradiance and photon echo when the exciting radiation frequency does not coincide with the central frequency of an inhomogeneously broadened line. It is found that the distortion of the profile of a nonresonantly excited superradiance signal depends strongly on the spectral width of the exciting pulses.

Superradiance and photon echo effects in the interaction of coherent optical pulses with inhomogeneously broadened systems

Sergey M. Zakharov, Edward A. Manykin

A theoretical analysis is given of the phenomena of superradiance and photon echo in the interaction of coherent light pulses with a resonant medium emitting inhomogeneously broadened lines. A delay of the superradiance signal is predicted. The properties of the response function of a two-level system and of the photon echo are considered.

Superradiant Damping Effects in Photon-Echo Theory

Antonio M. Ponte Goncalves, Andree A. Tallet, R. Lefèbvre

A theoretical model for superradiant damping effect in inhomogeneously broadened media and its application to photon-echo problems are discussed. Only optically thin systems are considered, and all nonradiative relaxation mechanisms are neglected. Numerical calculations are performed for a very wide square inhomogeneous line shape and square applied pulses. It is shown that excitation of the system becomes increasingly difficult as the superradiant lifetime ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ becomes comparable with ${T}_{2}^{*}$. The energy reradiated after the end of the exciting pulse is considerable for ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}\ensuremath{\approx}{T}_{2}^{*}$ and for some applied pulse areas. Two-pulse sequences produce multiple echoes as the microscopic polarizations spontaneously rephase. The first-echo amplitude maximum is found to occur for first-applied-pulse areas increasingly above $\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\pi}$ as ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ decreases. For a given first-pulse area, the echo intensities increase initially as ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ decreases (negligible damping) and finally decrease and vanish (important damping). The ratio of the second- to first-echo amplitudes is found to be proportional to $\frac{{T}_{2}^{*}}{{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}}$ for small superradiance levels and to decrease when ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ approaches ${T}_{2}^{*}$. An approximate estimate of this ratio is derived for the region of linearity in $\frac{{T}_{2}^{*}}{{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}}$.

Coherent responses of the resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation

S. O. Elyutin

Coherent responses of resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation are numerically considered. The inhomogeneous broadening of one-photon transition, the local field effect, and the substrate dispersion are involved into analysis. For a certain intensity of incident pulses a strong coherent interaction in the form of sharp spikes of superradiation is observed in transmitted radiation. The Lorentz field correction and the substrate dispersion weaken the effect, providing additional spectral shifts. Specific features of photon echo in the form of multiple responses to a double or triple pulse excitation is discussed.

Primary photon echo in optically dense media

Oleg Kh Khasanov, T. V. Smirnova, Olga M. Fedotova

The primary photon echo signal excited by two non-collinear pulses in optically dense media with extreme inhomogeneous broadening is investigated theoretically and numerically. Non-linear evolution of both echo exciting pulses and echo response during propagation is taken into account. Red frequency shift of the primary photon echo is predicted. The influence of pulse transformation on the echo time delay is analyzed.

Theoretical study of photon echoes associated with the coherent nonlinear optical effect in a resonant three-level system

M. Aihara, Humio Inaba

An analytical study of the photon echoes associated with the three-level system interacting resonantly with optical pulses possessing two different frequencies is performed. It is predicted that photon echoes arise at anomalous times corresponding to the correlation between the inhomogeneous broadenings for the different spectral lines as well as at the normal time expected in a simple two-level system. This new effect is caused by the coupling of the two resonant transitions through the common energy level. Furthermore, if the particle does not have inversion symmetry, the echoes with the sum or difference frequency of the exciting optical pulses can be observed in such a system. The quantitative analysis is also given for intensities, direction of propagation and polarizations of the anomalous echoes which depend upon the exciting pulses with different frequency.
