Statistical Mechanics for a Class of Quantum Statistics

Abstract

Generalized statistical distributions for identical particles are introduced for the case where filling a single-particle quantum state by particles depends on filling states of different momenta. The system of one-dimensional bosons with a two-body potential that can be solved by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz is shown to be equivalent thermodynamically to a system of free particles obeying statistical distributions of the above class. The quantum statistics arising in this way are completely determined by the two-particle scattering phases of the corresponding interacting systems. An equation determining the statistical distributions for these statistics is derived.

A Note on Statistical Interactions and the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz

Denis Bernard, Yong-Shi Wu

We show that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for one-dimensional integrable many-body systems can be reinterpreted in such a way that they only code the statistical interactions, in the sense of Haldane, between particles of identical or different momenta. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of these systems can be characterized by the generalized ideal gases recently proposed by one of us. For example, the Yang-Yang $δ$-function gas is a gas with specific statistical interactions between particles of different momenta, while the Calogero-Sutherland system provides a model for an ideal gas of particles with a fractional statistics.

Bosonic and fermionic single-particle states in the Haldane approach to statistics for identical particles

Serguei B. Isakov

We give two formulations of exclusion statistics (ES) using a variable number of bosonic or fermionic single-particle states which depends on the number of particles in the system. Associated bosonic and fermionic ES parameters are introduced and are discussed for FQHE quasiparticles, anyons in the lowest Landau level and for the Calogero-Sutherland model. In the latter case, only one family of solutions is emphasized to be sufficient to recover ES; appropriate families are specified for a number of formulations of the Calogero-Sutherland model. We extend the picture of a variable number of single-particle states to generalized ideal gases with statistical interaction between particles of different momenta. Integral equations are derived which determine the momentum distribution for single-particle states and distribution of particles over the single-particle states in the thermal equilibrium. \textcopyright{} 1996 the American Physical Society.

Equilibrium thermodynamic properties of interacting two-component bosons in one dimension

Antoine Klauser, Jean-Sébastien Caux

The interplay of quantum statistics, interactions, and temperature is studied within the framework of the bosonic two-component theory with repulsive delta-function interaction in one dimension. We numerically solve the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and obtain the equation of state as a function of temperature and of the interaction strength, the relative chemical potential, and either the total chemical potential or a fixed number of particles, allowing quantification of the full crossover behavior of the system between its low-temperature ferromagnetic and high-temperature unpolarized regime, and from the low coupling decoherent regime to the fermionization regime at high interaction.

Gases in two dimensions: universal thermodynamics and its consequences

Dragoş-Victor Anghel

I discuss ideal and interacting quantum gases obeying general fractional exclusion statistics. For systems with constant density of single-particle states, described in the mean field approximation, the entropy depends neither on the microscopic exclusion statistics, nor on the interaction. Such systems are called thermodynamically equivalent and I show that the microscopic reason for this equivalence is a one-to-one correspondence between the excited states of these systems. This provides a method, different from the bosonization technique, of transforming between systems of different exclusion statistics. In the last section the macroscopic aspects of this method are discussed. In appendix A, I calculate the fluctuation of the ground-state population of a condensed Bose gas in a grand-canonical ensemble and mean field approximation, while in appendix B I show a situation where although the system exhibits fractional exclusion properties on microscopic energy intervals, a rigorous calculation of the population of single-particle states reveals a condensation phenomenon. This also implies a malfunction of the usual and simplified calculation technique of the most probable statistical distributions.

Generalized Exclusion Statistics in the Kondo Problem

A. P. Protogenov, V. A. Verbus

We consider the generalized exclusion statistics in the Kondo problem. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations have been used for a multicomponent system of particles obeying the generalized exclusion principle. We have found a relation between the derivative of the phase shift of the scattering matrix for Fermi particles and for particles characterized by generalized exclusion statistics. We show that the statistical matrix in the Kondo problem has a universal form in the high and low temperature limits.

STATISTICS IN ONE DIMENSION

Charilaos Aneziris, A. P. Balachandran, Diptiman Sen

We show that there are novel generalizations of statistics for identical particles in one dimension. These arise due to possible boundary conditions on wave functions, or equivalently due to δ-function interactions, at points of coincidence of particle coordinates. Special choices of these boundary conditions describe bosons, fermions or paraparticles. The general solution for the boundary conditions involves vector-valued wave functions and statistics with non-Abelian features, even though the classical configuration space has an Abelian fundamental group. Physical models leading to such non-Abelian statistics, involving for example δ-function interactions of spins, are constructed. Properties under parity and time reversal of the new boundary conditions are studied. It is shown that the Bethe ansatz does not always give eigenstates of energy. When it does, the wave numbers in the ansatz for three or more particles must satisfy a weaker form of the Yang-Baxter equations and certain additional equations. The energy spectrum and wave functions for identical particles on R1 or S1 are discussed in some simple cases. Our work generalizes the previous work of Lieb and Liniger, Lieb, Yang and Leinaas and Myrheim.
