Optical Bistable Operation in Fabry-Perot Resonator Constructed with Thin-Film Faraday Medium

Abstract

This letter deals with observations and a study on optical bistability in a thin Fabry-Perot resonator made of a Faraday medium. Using a commercial TbBi-garnet film as the Fabry-Perot resonator, it was established experimentally that the resonator represents an optical bistability, by treating both the thermally induced nonlinear effect and the Faraday effect, and that its characteristics are controlled by an external magnetic field through the Faraday effect.

Optical bistability on a thin-film Faraday rotator

Masao Hirano

We proposed an all-optical bistable unit made of a Faraday medium and investigated theoretically its unique characteristics. Optical bistability in our proposed unit was experimantally confirmed. In this paper, using a 830 nm wavelength laser diode and a thin garnet film rotator as a Fabry-Perot resonator, optical bistability is confirmed again. Bistable characteristics, threshold incident power, on-off power ratio, and dynamic characteristics, are examined to attain controllability with the external magnetic field. In our proposed unit's construction, an all-optical sensing device (a magnetic field sensor) is proposed and evaluated for application to the OB operation.

Nonlinear fiber Fabry-Perot resonator using thermo-optic effect

Kazuhiko Ogusu, Shoji Yamamoto

A new nonlinear fiber-based Fabry-Perot resonator (FFPR) is proposed for bistable optical devices in fiber optics, The device is constructed by embedding a metal-dielectric Fabry-Perot resonator containing a thermo-optic material into a single-mode fiber. The transmission and attenuation characteristics of the linear FFPR have been analyzed under Gaussian-beam approximation by the method of plane-wave expansion. The effects of the mirror separation, the thickness of the metal mirror, the coating number of the multilayer mirror, and the spacer index have been investigated numerically. Moreover optical bistability in the nonlinear FFPR has been investigated by the graphical solution. It has been found that the input-output characteristics of the proposed FFPR are strongly affected by the angular divergence of the beam in the spacer. Optical bistability has been demonstrated experimentally at the milliwatt-power levels by using a 1.3- mu m diode laser and single-mode fibers.>

Theoretical analysis of the optical bistability with Faraday effect

Masao Hirano

We have proposed and discussed that an introduction of the Faraday medium to the optical bistable devices brings new and good characteristics on the application to optical sensing. In this paper, characteristics of the optical bistability are analyzed theoretically for the optical bistable operation with the Faraday effect, the threshold power, and several parameter dependences of the characteristic. Consequently, by controlling them with an external magnetic field which is an operatable factor, the optical bistability shows much usefulness and effectiveness by the following points: the controllability of the bistable operation, the reduction in the threshold power, and the enlargement in the discontinuous power variation ratio.

Optical bistability of a dielectric cladded thin film near the total internal reflection state: theory and experiment

I. C. Khoo, Jingya Hou

A nonlinear thin film bounded by two dielectric media can act as an optical switching bistable device owing to two mechanisms at work near the total internal reflection state. One is the intensity-dependent index change induced by the optical field in the thin film before transmission occurs, and the other is the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interference associated with the high reflectivities at the two interfaces just after transmission takes place.

Nonlinear Fabry-Perot characteristics of a thin film near the TIR state

The electrodynamic and nonlinear optical properties of an interface between two media, one of which is nonlinear, have been studied in the context of optical switching and bistability. In this paper we consider the case in which a thin-film nonlinear material is sandwiched between two higher-index dielectric media; i.e., there are two interfaces. For an optical beam incident near the total internal re- flection state the large reflectivity of the two inter- faces gives rise to Fabry-Perot transmission/re- flection. This together with the nonlinear phase shift that can be induced in the thin film makes it possible for the system to perform switching and bistable operations.

Nonlinear Fabry–Perot action and optical bistability of a dielectric cladded thin film near the total internal reflection state

I. C. Khoo, Jingya Hou

A nonlinear thin film bounded by two dielectric media could act as an optical switching and bistability device, owing to two physical mechanisms at work near the total internal reflection state. One is the simple intensity-dependent index change induced by the finite optical field in the film before transmission occurs, and the other is the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interference associated with the high reflectivities at the two interfaces when transmission takes place. We present a detailed theory for these two mechanisms and for the case in which the nonlinearity is also nonlocal (e.g., in a liquid-crystal film). The results for multiple switchings and hysteresis hold in general for any nonlinear thin film.
