Abstract

We show analytically and numerically that the unusual photorefractive nonlinear response of Sn2P2S6 crystals leads to a variety of new features of coherent optical oscillation. In addition to the explanation of the known peculiarities, new features are predicted.

Optical Multivibrator with Ferroelectric Sn2P2S6

Periodic anharmonic modulation of output intensity is studied for semilinear coherent oscillator with photorefractive crystal that possesses two types of movable charge carriers. The pulse amplitude and modulation frequency are shown to depend considerably on grating spacing of photorefractive grating. We calculate these dependences within the model proposed earlier [A. Shumelyuk, A. Hryhoraschuk, S. Odoulov, Phys Rev. A, 72, 023819 (2005)] and show satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.

Slowdown and speedup of light pulses using the self-compensating photorefractive response

Boris I. Sturman, P. Mathey, Hans Rudolf Jauslin

We study theoretically the effects of pulse slowdown and speedup in ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 possessing a self-compensating photorefractive response. It is shown that both these effects can be implemented in one sample for sufficiently large values of the coupling strength. In contrast to other types of the photorefractive response (local and nonlocal), the output pulses do not suffer from strong spatial amplification and broadening.

Parametric Oscillation in Photorefractive Crystals with Local Response in Unclosed Optical Cavities

Adam Mazur, A. D. Novikov, S. G. Odulov +1 more

Steady-state coherent oscillation in the ring-loop and double-side mirror geometries is first observed and studied in media with local nonlinear response. The results of calculation are presented stating that the oscillation becomes possible providing two necessary conditions are met: the oscillation waves appear 1) misaligned with respect to strictly backward to pumps directions to restore the phase matching, and 2) they are shifted in frequency with respect to the pump waves. By appropriate choice of frequencies of two incident waves in double-side mirror geometry one of oscillating waves may be done a perfect conjugate replica of an input wave with limited spatial spectrum.

Critical Enhancement of Photorefractive Beam Coupling

Evgeniy V. Podivilov, Boris I. Sturman, H. C. Pedersen +1 more

We show that a hybridization of the optical and material nonlinearities takes place near the threshold of the subharmonic generation in photorefractive crystals. It results in a critical (with a singularity) enhancement of the rate of spatial amplification of light waves and leads to a variety of new optical critical phenomena.

Increase of light-beam coherence by two-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals

Nickolai V. Bogodaev, N. M. Polozkov, Vladimir V. Shkunov +2 more

We demonstrate that two-wave mixing of partially coherent light beams inside a medium with an inertial nonlinear response allows one to increase the coherence substantially. An increase of the coherence function from 0.24 to 0.94 is demonstrated experimentally in SBN:Ce crystal.
