Strongly Correlated Quantum Matter: A Subjective Overview of Selected Fundamental Aspects

Józef Spałek

In this brief overview, I address some of the fundamental topics related to the physics of strongly correlated fermions, which have been also the subject of my research. After addressing the question why the field has a fundamental meaning, we next turn to the specific problems with their simple theoretical description. Those topics are: (i) the concept of spindependent masses of heavy particles and its subsequent experimental verification; (ii) the correlated metal–insulator transitions of the Mott–Hubbardtype; (iii) real space pairing and its subsequent experimental verification for high-temperature superconducting cuprates. I mention also the persistence of quantum spin and charge excitations in the superconducting phase. All those phenomena confirm the view that the strongly correlated fermionic \nsystems represent a new class of quantum liquids, with some properties quantitatively different than those of the Landau Fermi liquids. Namely, they can be classified as those that fall in between those of the anomalous Landau Fermi liquid and localized-magnetic-moment system.

Emergence of quasiparticles in a doped Mott insulator

Yao Wang, Yu He, Krzysztof Wohlfeld +9 more

Abstract How a Mott insulator develops into a weakly coupled metal upon doping is a central question to understanding various emergent correlated phenomena. To analyze this evolution and its connection to the high-Tc cuprates, we study the single-particle spectrum for the doped Hubbard model using cluster perturbation theory on superclusters. Starting from extremely low doping, we identify a heavily renormalized quasiparticle dispersion that immediately develops across the Fermi level, and a weakening polaronic side band at higher binding energy. The quasiparticle spectral weight roughly grows at twice the rate of doping in the low doping regime, but this rate is halved at optimal doping. In the heavily doped regime, we find both strong electron-hole asymmetry and a persistent presence of Mott spectral features. Finally, we discuss the applicability of the single-band Hubbard model to describe the evolution of nodal spectra measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the single-layer cuprate La2−xSrxCuO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15). This work benchmarks the predictive power of the Hubbard model for electronic properties of high-Tc cuprates.

Topological Criticality with Charge-\(3e\) Fluctuations in the \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\) Triangular-Lattice Hofstadter--Hubbard Model

Yang Liu, Ya-Hui Zhang, Xue-Yang Song

A transition between an integer quantum Hall insulator and a chiral spin liquid can become critical without closing the single-electron gap, raising the question of which composite excitations govern the change in topological order. We investigate this question in the \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\) triangular-lattice Hofstadter--Hubbard model at one particle per site and magnetic flux \(π/3\) per triangle. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group calculations, we identify a weak-coupling integer quantum Hall phase and an interaction-driven \(\mathrm{SU}(3)_1\) chiral spin liquid. Near the transition, both the neutral and charge-\(3e\) correlation lengths increase substantially, whereas the single-electron correlation length remains short, providing evidence for a Chern--Simons--Higgs critical theory, where a gauge-invariant monopole carries the quantum numbers of a fermionic \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\)-singlet trion. We discuss the implications for doping the system and recent experiments on doping \(ν=-2/3\) fractional quantum anomalous Hall in tMoTe\(_2\).
