Abstract

A transition between an integer quantum Hall insulator and a chiral spin liquid can become critical without closing the single-electron gap, raising the question of which composite excitations govern the change in topological order. We investigate this question in the \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\) triangular-lattice Hofstadter--Hubbard model at one particle per site and magnetic flux \(π/3\) per triangle. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group calculations, we identify a weak-coupling integer quantum Hall phase and an interaction-driven \(\mathrm{SU}(3)_1\) chiral spin liquid. Near the transition, both the neutral and charge-\(3e\) correlation lengths increase substantially, whereas the single-electron correlation length remains short, providing evidence for a Chern--Simons--Higgs critical theory, where a gauge-invariant monopole carries the quantum numbers of a fermionic \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\)-singlet trion. We discuss the implications for doping the system and recent experiments on doping \(ν=-2/3\) fractional quantum anomalous Hall in tMoTe\(_2\).

Quantum Hall to chiral spin liquid transition in a triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

We investigate the weak interaction integer quantum Hall (IQH) phase, the intermediate interaction phase identified as a chiral spin liquid (CSL) and the transition between them in the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at a density of one electron per site in an orbital magnetic field corresponding to one-quarter flux per plaquette. Our primary tool is the finite system density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method with both interaction-strength scan and fixed interaction techniques for cylinders of circumference 3, 5, and 7 and lengths up to 240. For the IQH phase, we use single particle exact diagonalization to clarify finite size effects, including an excess charge on the edges of our cylinders, and the limitations of entanglement spectra degeneracies on small circumference cylinders. For both phases, we use DMRG to study the entanglement spectra, the entanglement entropy, and the effect of flux insertion on charge and spin pumping, all of which show key differences between the two phases. To study the transition, we use interaction-strength scans extending between the two phases, and apply a scaling data collapse of a bond-dimerization order parameter to extract critical exponents. We also extract critical behavior from the divergence of correlation lengths on the IQH side, measuring decay away from edges of both the dimerization order parameter and transverse edge currents. The critical behavior and exponents are consistent with an Ising transition in 1+1 dimensions. Finally, we obtain excited states in various quantum number sectors finding that the gap to a charge neutral momentum $π$ excitation corresponding to fluctuations of the dimerization order parameter closes in the vicinity of the critical point but gaps to other excitations remain large.

Chiral spin liquid and quantum phase transition in the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Stefan Divic, Tomohiro Soejima, Valentin Crépel +2 more

Recent advances in moiré engineering motivate the study of lattice models of strongly-correlated electrons subjected to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We analyze the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where a chiral spin liquid phase may exist between weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic phases. We use matrix product state methods and analytical arguments to investigate this model compactified to cylinders of finite circumference. We uncover a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which, we argue, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition on odd-circumference cylinders. We numerically verify the spontaneous symmetry breaking and further demonstrate that this transition is associated with algebraic long-range correlations of various spin-singlet, charge-neutral operators. For even-circumference cylinders, the transition becomes a crossover associated with a large correlation length that grows substantially with circumference. Our findings suggest that in the two-dimensional limit, the transition to a chiral spin liquid phase is continuous and features critical fluctuations of the current.

Phases and criticality of the triangular lattice SU ( N ) Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Lu Zhang, R. Liu, Xue-Yang Song

We report the study of phases and transitions of SU(N) Hofstadter-Hubbard model subject to commensurate magnetic field on the triangular lattice. At filling one fermion per site, for the number of fermion flavors 2 <= N <= 8, we identify three distinct phases and calculate critical interaction strength from parton large-N mean-field approximation. Integer quantum Hall, chiral spin liquid, and valence bond solid states could be realized upon varying the Hubbard interaction U and the number of flavor N . We construct the critical theory for the putative continuous transition from quantum Hall states to chiral spin liquid and calculate the critical transport behavior using quantum Boltzmann equations for general N . These results could be validated in synthetic systems such as moire superlattices and cold atom platforms.

Robust superconductivity upon doping chiral spin liquid and Chern insulators in a Hubbard-Hofstadter model

Clemens Kuhlenkamp, Stefan Divic, Michael P. Zaletel +2 more

Demonstrating superconductivity in purely repulsive Hubbard models is a compelling goal which underscores the counter-intuitive ability of Coulomb interactions to mediate superconductivity. Here, we present numerical evidence for robust superconductivity in a triangular Hubbard-Hofstadter model at $π/2$ flux per plaquette. Employing infinite density matrix renormalization group calculations on infinite cylinders of finite circumference, we observe superconducting ground states for a wide range of dopings, whose pair-correlations strengthen as the 2D limit is approached. At a density of one electron per site, Hubbard interactions have been reported to drive the insulating parent state of the superconductor from an integer quantum Hall (IQH) state to a chiral spin liquid (CSL). Our findings give credence to a recent proposal that proximity to the IQH-CSL transition serves to make chiral superconductivity energetically favorable on doping, and also correctly predicts the nature of the edge modes in the superconductor. On the CSL side, this suggests the superconductor can be thought of as arising from Laughlin's `anyon superconductivity' mechanism. Thus the Hubbard-Hofstadter model studied here offers a clean and experimentally accessible setup, potentially realizable in moiré heterostructures, for exploring the properties of anyonic matter at finite density and the interplay of topological order, quantum criticality and superconductivity.

Spinless charged excitation at the interface between a conventional topological insulator and a topological Mott insulator

Cesar A. Gallegos, Andrew J. Millis, Steven R. White

We investigate the interface separating two topologically distinct insulating phases of matter using extensive density-matrix renormalization group calculations to study the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model with a spatially varying interaction strength, chosen to realize both integer quantum Hall and chiral spin liquid states in different spatial regions. We find that the integer quantum Hall-chiral spin liquid interface hosts a spinless charged excitation that is bound to the interface. This mode at the interface is identified through charge and spin pumping, and by direct calculations of low-lying excited states. We also characterize bulk excitations in both phases, finding evidence for fractionalization in the chiral spin liquid and for spin-triplet exciton formation in the integer quantum Hall phase.

Interaction-driven topological phase transitions in fermionic SU(3) systems

Mohsen Hafez-Torbati, Jun-Hui Zheng, Bernhard Irsigler +1 more

We consider SU(3) fermions on the triangular lattice in the presence of a gauge potential which stabilizes a quantum Hall insulator (QHI) at the density of one particle per lattice site. We investigate the effect of the Hubbard interaction, favoring magnetic long-range order, and a three-sublattice potential (TSP), favoring a normal insulator (NI), on the system. For a weak TSP we find that the Hubbard interaction drives the QHI into a three-sublattice magnetic Mott insulator (MMI). For intermediate values of the TSP we identify two transition points upon increasing the Hubbard interaction. The first transition is from the NI to the QHI and the second transition is from the QHI to the MMI. For large values of the TSP a charge-ordered magnetic insulator (COMI) emerges between the NI and the QHI, leading to an interaction-driven COMI-to-QHI transition.
