Abstract

We present simulations and experimental results for quantum-noise-initiated emission from an optical parametric generator (OPG) fabricated from periodically poled lithium niobate. The model we employ, which includes transverse coupling effects to enable off-axis phase matching, has been successfully used for describing broadband emission spectra in OPG's and optical parametric amplifiers. The emission spectra and the quantum statistics deduced from macroscopic fluctuations are compared between simulations and experiment.

We present simulations and experimental results for quantum noise initiated emission from a periodically- poled lithium niobate optical parametric generator (OPG). Our model successfully describes broad-band emission spectra in OPGs and optical parametric amplifiers. The emission spectra and the quantum statistics deduced from macroscopic fluctuations between simulations and experiment are compared.

Broadband and off-axis optical parametric generation in periodically poled LiNbO_3

Yiyi Guan, Joseph W. Haus, Peter Powers

A model is presented that includes broadband, off-axis light generation for parametric downconversion processes. We apply this to parametric generation with material parameters adapted for periodically poled lithium niobate; our simulations are compared with experimental results. Our simulations explore the competition between on-axis and off-axis signal generation. With a broad-area pump, we find that a shorter crystal is more effective at suppressing off-axis signal generation.

We report broadband optical parametric generation (OPG) in a single periodically poled lithium niobate crystal with a picosecond pump pulse at a fixed wavelength. We also demonstrate efficient optical parametric amplification of a broadband seed pulse within the quasi-phase-matched OPG band. The broad parametric gain band is attributed to group-velocity matching and degeneracy between the signal and idler, and the broad spectral width of the pumping source.

Optical parametric generation in periodically poled lithium niobate

We present recent experimental and simulation results for broad-band, off-axis infrared light generation by a parametric down-conversion process. We use a periodically poled lithium niobate in the experiments. Our simulations explore the competition between on-axis and off-axis signal generation. We explore the contrast between a narrow pump and a broad pump on the emission spectrum.

Generation and Detection of Coherent Pulse Trains in Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Through Optical Parametric Amplification

Dayen Chad Voratovic

This work reports on the generation, modulation, and detection of temporally coherent pulses in periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) configured as an optical parametric amplifier (OPA).The OPA was pumped at 1 µm, by a 10 kHz, 1 ns, Nd:YAG laser. The cw seeding sources for the OPA were two separate 1550 nm lasers. One source had a short coherence length of .3km, the other a long coherence length of 95 km.The generated pulse trains where phase modulated by using a set of mirrors on a single axis motorized stage.A 10 km fiber optic delay line was used to simulate free space propagation.A homodyne, coherent optical detection system, utilizing the in-phase and quadrature components of the circularly polarized local oscillator, was built to detect the amplitude and phase modulated pulse trains. We report the detection of the modulated signal for the long coherence length source and the loss of the modulated signal for the short coherence length source, demonstrating that the OPA process can transfer the temporal coherence (or coherence length) of the input signal to the pulse-amplified signal
