Abstract

The dynamics of orthogonal polarization modes in anisotropic plane resonators with resonant medium has been studied. A model of light-induced anisotropic effects in a resonant medium under polarized excitation in conditions of strong saturation has been developed. The origination conditions of polarization instability and its influence on spatial-temporal dynamics have been determined. The methods of arranging the laser beams with special polarization structure have been suggested.

Polarization self-oscillations in an anisotropic interferometer with a resonant medium

Ганчеренок Игорь Иванович, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +2 more

The dynamics of an anisotropic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with three- and four-level resonant media has been studied. The origination conditions of complex spatial-temporal polarization dynamic operating modes of the FPI have been analysed at constant intensity of the input light beam. It has been shown that the intensity oscillations are conditioned by the concurrent components of resonance nonlinearity, which are due to population of different excited states of molecules.

Polarization dynamics and control of anisotropic nonlinear interferometer

O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik, Omar A. Ormachea +2 more

In this work a theoretical study of the interaction between a light beam and an anisotropic nonlinear interferometer has been considered and methods to control the transmission of the microcavity using optical and magnetic fields have been developed. It has been demonstrated that anisotrophy of intracavity media determines the differences in transmission functions for various polarization modes and produces polarization instability. Varying spectroscopic parameters of the resonant medium and parameters of the anisotropic element, different types of intensity self-oscillations for different polarization modes can be obtained. To control the characteristics of nonlinear interferometer, it is proposed to use an additional light beam whose frequency is tuned into the absorption band from the excited level. The propagation characteristics of periodic magento-optical and dielectric multilayer films made of alternating layers of these materials having a symmetric periodicity with the center of the structure under a magnetic field is analyzed. The magnetic induction on this type of materials is temperature dependent and modifies the transmission and reflection characteristics of these structures. This kinds of structures, gives us the possibilities for an additional controlling of the characteristics of nonlinear interferometer.

Polarization stability and dynamics in a model for a polarization-isotropic laser that goes beyond third-order Lamb theory

N. B. Abraham, Mark D. Matlin, R. S. Gioggia

Instabilities and dynamical pulsations are common features of solutions of a model that includes the material variable dynamics for a laser with a polarization isotropic resonator and with a homogeneously broadened j=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}j=0 transition. These resemble in some respects features found in third-order Lamb theories under anisotropic conditions, such as splitting of the optical field into two relatively independent orthogonally polarized modes with different optical frequencies. At higher intensities the amplitudes and frequencies of these modes exhibit such strong coupling that a ``two-mode'' description loses its usefulness or effectiveness. Various periodic attractors with strong intensity and polarization pulsations are found for moderate excitation levels. Some of these attractors preserve the breaking of the polarization isotropy on average just as does any linearly polarized solution. But in some cases the dynamics restore the polarization isotropy on average. We also find other dynamical phenomena, including periodic and apparently chaotic states, often involving rapid switching between long interludes of nearly constant polarization, and homoclinic behavior. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Influence of light polarization on the dynamics of optically pumped lasers

M. Arjona, R. Corbalán, Ferran Laguarta +2 more

The dynamic behavior of a coherently pumped ring laser with a homogeneously broadened four-level medium is analyzed theoretically, considering linearly polarized pump and generated laser beams. The laser is shown to be much more stable when these polarizations are parallel than when they are orthogonal. In the latter case the instability pump threshold can be as low as four times the first laser threshold, and the laser dynamics shows Lorenz-type features.

Spatial resonance in an anisotropic medium with modulated gyrotropy

Levon S. Aslanyan, H. H. Hovakimyan

The problem of the propagation of linearly polarized light in an optically anisotropic medium with spatially modulated gyrotropy is considered. The analysis has been carried out using optical Bloch equations in the approximation of a rotating wave. For clarity, the results are interpreted on the Poincaré sphere. It is demonstrated that under the resonance conditions, i.e., when the spatial frequency of modulation of gyrotropy coincides with the spatial frequency of polarization beats, a resonant increase in the amplitude of these beats is observed.

Instability of a ring resonator with a nonlinear gyrotropic medium in the presence of spatially inhomogeneous arbitrarily polarized perturbations

O G Lobanova, Vladimir Makarov, Elena B. Cherepetskaya

A theoretical derivation is given of the condition of stability of steady states of the field in a ring resonator with an isotropic nonlinear gyrotropic medium in the presence of an arbitrarily polarized perturbation of a given size. It is shown that it is possible to find the parameters of the polarization of light exciting the resonator which ensure the maximum number of stable steady states of the field in the required range of the intensities of the transmitted radiation.
