Influence of light polarization on the dynamics of optically pumped lasers

Abstract

The dynamic behavior of a coherently pumped ring laser with a homogeneously broadened four-level medium is analyzed theoretically, considering linearly polarized pump and generated laser beams. The laser is shown to be much more stable when these polarizations are parallel than when they are orthogonal. In the latter case the instability pump threshold can be as low as four times the first laser threshold, and the laser dynamics shows Lorenz-type features.

New insights into the influence of light polarization on the dynamics of optically pumped lasers

R. Corbalán, Ramon A. Vilaseca, Montserrat Arjona +3 more

The dynamics of an optically pumped single mode laser with pump and laser fields with either parallel or crossed linear polarizations and a homogeneously broadened four-level medium is theoretically investigated in detail. Numerical simulations reveal dramatically different dynamic behaviors for these two polarization configurations. The analysis of the model equations allows us to find the physical origin of both behaviors. In particular, the Lorenz-type dynamics exhibited by the orthogonal configuration arises from the lack of coherent effects in spite of the optical pumping.

Dynamics of coherently pumped lasers with linearly polarized pump and generated fields

The influence of light polarization on the dynamics of an optically pumped single-mode laser with a homogeneously broadened four-level medium is theoretically investigated in detail. Pump and laser fields with either parallel or crossed linear polarizations are considered, as are typical in far-infrared-laser experiments. Numerical simulations reveal dramatically different dynamic behaviors for these two polarization configurations. The analysis of the model equations allows us to find the physical origin of both behaviors. In particular, the crossed-polarization configuration is shown to be effective in decoupling the pump and laser fields, thus allowing for the appearance of Lorenz-type dynamics.

Influence of pump coherence on the dynamic behavior of a laser

Jaume Pujol, Ramon A. Vilaseca, R. Corbalán +1 more

The dynamic behavior of a coherently pumped single-mode unidirectional ring laser with a homogeneously broadened three-level active medium is studied. Our formulation is based on a set often real equations of the plane-wave, mean-field Maxwell–Bloch type. The instability domain in the main control parameters space is determined. Our numerical study of these equations for a parameter range of the type explored in the recent experiments by Weiss Brock [ Phys. Rev. Lett.57, 2804 ( 1986)] reveals some similarities, but striking differences between our theoretical predictions and their experimental observations are also noted.

Polarization phenomena in a laser coherently pumped by a linearly polarized field

Ramon A. Vilaseca, Carles Serrat, Alexander M. Kul'minskii +3 more

The field intensity and polarization behaviour of an optically pumped laser is investigated in different operating conditions. For a linearly polarized pump field, a strong gain anisotropy is induced which favours generation of light with a polarization parallel to that of the pump field. Thus gain anisotropy can be counterbalanced by cavity-loss anisotropy only at low pumping field intensities, and the interplay between both types of anisotropy leads to polarization switching phenomena. In contrast to the case of the incoherently pumped laser, the decay rate for the magnetic dipole induced on the J = 1 level plays a minor role in determining the polarization dynamics. The influence of a longitudinal magnetic field or of modulation of the pump-field polarization orientation leads to new features and complex dynamic behaviour which includes full polarization (or vector ) chaos.

Polarization states and coherent effects in a coherently pumped J″=1→J=0→J′=1 isotropic-cavity laser

We have theoretically explored the behavior of a coherently pumped ${J}^{\ensuremath{''}}=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}J=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{0}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=1$ isotropic cavity laser and compared it with the behavior of other related laser systems involving atomic or molecular levels with angular quantum numbers $0$ and $1.$ It is shown that at low and moderate pumping strengths it behaves very differently from the ${J}^{\ensuremath{''}}=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{0}J=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ laser exhibiting no pump-induced gain anisotropy and allowing for linearly polarized (LP) solutions with arbitrary azimuth and circularly polarized (CP) solutions, depending on the values of the molecular relaxation rates. Above the instability threshold, a variety of dynamic regimes involving the polarization degree of freedom can be found, including LP states with rotating azimuth (as in incoherently pumped $J=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{0}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=1$ or $J=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ lasers), antiphase dynamics, and full polarization chaos.

INSTABILITIES IN DOPPLER BROADENED OPTICALLY PUMPED FAR-INFRARED LASERS

Ferran Laguarta, Jaume Pujol, Ramon A. Vilaseca +1 more

We study the dynamic behaviour of a coherently pumped single-mode unidirectional ring laser with an active medium of Doppler broadened three-level atoms. Our formulation is based on a set of 9N+1 real equations of the plane-wave mean-field Maxwell-Bloch type (N is the number of velocity groups of molecules considered). This model predicts, for a parameter range of the type explored in the experiments by Weiss and Brock (Phys. Rev. Lett. 57 (1986) 2804), a behaviour that reproduces most of their main experimental features. These include the instability pump threshold and the sequence of instabilities ocurring on resonator tuning and on increasing pump strength.
