Abstract

The cross-Kerr nonlinearity arising between two far-infrared (FIR) pulses is investigated in a three-coupled-quantum-well (TCQW) structure based on intersubband transitions. The results show that the giant Kerr nonlinearity with a relatively large cross-phase-modulation phase shift can be used for realizing polarization quantum phase gate in this TCQW structure. Such a semiconductor system is much more practical than its atomic counterpart because of its flexible design and the wide tunable parameters. This protocol may have potential applications in FIR all-optical switch design and quantum information processing with solid-state materials.

Controllable entanglement and polarization phase gate in coupled double quantum-well structures

Wen‐Xing Yang, Ray‐Kuang Lee

By analyzing the nonlinear optical response in an asymmetric coupled double quantum well structure based on the intersubband transitions, we show that a giant Kerr nonlinearity with a relatively large cross-phase modulation coefficient can be used to produce efficient photonphoton entanglement and implement an all-optical two-qubit quantum polarization phase gate. We also demonstrate that such photon-photon entanglement is practically controllable and may facilitate more practical applications in all-optical quantum information and computation.

The two-qubit controlled-phase gate based on cross-phase modulation in GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum wells

Xiaoqing Luo, D. L. Wang, Hao Fan +1 more

We present a realization of two-qubit controlled-phase gate, based on the linear and nonlinear properties of the probe and signal optical pulses in an asymmetric GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum wells. It is shown that, in the presence of cross-phase modulation, a giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity and mutually matched group velocities of the probe and signal optical pulses can be achieved while realizing the suppression of linear and self-Kerr optical absorption synchronously. These characteristics serve to exhibit an all-optical two-qubit controlled-phase gate within efficiently controllable photon-photon entanglement by semiconductor mediation. In addition, by using just polarizing beam splitters and half-wave plates, we propose a practical experimental scheme to discriminate the maximally entangled polarization state of two-qubit through distinguishing two out of the four Bell states. This proposal potentially enables the realization of solid states mediated all-optical quantum computation and information processing.

Giant Kerr Nonlinearity for Three-Coupled-Quantum-Well Nanostructures

Ali Raheli

A four level ladder scheme is employed for the realization of slow light large Kerr nonlinear indices in an asymmetric semiconductor three-coupled-quantum-well (TCQW) structure based on intersubband transitions. It is shown that a giant Kerr nonlinearity accompanied with negligible loss can be achieved by properly tuning the intensity of the control fields. A dressed state analysis is given to explain the origin of such a transparency based on slow light enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in this solid medium. In addition, we show that the three-photon detuning plays the important role in enhancing the third-order nonlinearity of the TCQW medium, and may provide new possibilities for technological applications in nonlinear optics and optical switching.

Fifth-order nonlinearity and 3-qubit phase gate in a five-level tripod atomic system

Fuli Li, Ying Gu, Lijun Wang +1 more

We first investigate the nonlinear optical response of a five-level tripod atomic system in electromagnetically induced transparency and then propose a 3-qubit phase gate protocol based on the fifth-order nonlinearity. The cross-phase modulation among the three weak fields induced by the fifth-order nonlinearity in electromagnetically induced transparency can produce the phase shift of order π, which can be used to realize the 3-qubit polarization phase gate. This protocol should have potential applications in quantum information processing.

Giant Kerr Nonlinearity, Controlled Entangled Photons and Polarization Phase Gates in Coupled Quantum-Well Structures

Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We study linear and nonlinear propagations of probe and signal pulses in a multiple quantum-well structure with a four-level, double Λ-type configuration. We show that slow, mutually matched group velocities and giant Kerr nonlinearity of the probe and the signal pulses may be achieved with nearly vanishing optical absorption. Based on these properties we demonstrate that two-qubit quantum polarization phase gates can be constructed and highly entangled photon pairs may be produced. In addition, we show that coupled slow-light soliton pairs with very low generation power can be realized in the system.

Nonlinear intersubband optical absorptions in a multiple quantum wells with an applied electric field

Wang Weizhong, P. Denney, I. Miyamoto +1 more

In multiple quantum wells system, a large dipole strength and a narrow band width were observed. This suggests that the intersubband optical transitions in a quantum well may have very large optical nonlinearities. The intersubband transition have potential for device applications in far-infrared laser amplifiers, photodetectors and high-speed electrooptical modulators. In device design, the region of input optical density for linear response is a very important parameter. And the optical saturation is related with tunnelling effects and the intersubband relaxations. So the intersubband nonlinear absorption is very valuble for a fundamental and a practical point of views. Recently, there are some works on this region [1], [2].
